Report PRESIDENT S Report A staff member s negative attitudes are particularly harmful to small businesses. This checklist can help you nip bad behavior in the bud. A negative attitude from just one employee can be particularly detrimental in small businesses. But eye rolling, sarcasm, complaining and other types of problem behavior must be nipped in the bud, regardless of the person s job performance or relationship to the boss. This checklist will help you navigate the tricky business of addressing toxic behavior: Hire positive people. Consider this kind of tone when advertising for help wanted: We re looking for genuinely nice people who are great to work with, respectful and won t hesitate to put the customer s best interest first. The tone you set throughout the hiring process lets potential employees know what kind of attitude will be expected. Document the problem. Keep track of examples of negative behavior and provide problem employees with a written notice to improve within 30 days. Be sure to keep it focused on how behaviors are negatively impacting the culture and are not simply a personal difference. Be quick. Stalling a confrontation will just drag out the process. Establish a way to address the behavior in the moment. Be clear. You must be specific about the behavior you consider toxic. Follow up. In performance reviews, cite any negative behavior that continues to exhibit itself. Reviews are also an opportunity to recognize improvement. Welcome our New Members Lockhart Sports Therapy Anice LeBeouf, DC 1015 W. San Antonio St., Lockhart 512-913-3993 MASCON, Inc. Sharon McCall 1460 Old Lytton Springs Rd., Lockhart 512-376-5096 Duran Gravel Co. Train managers to be good listeners in such discussions. Unhappy employees may feel uncomfortable airing their grievances or fear repercussions for speaking up. A candid conversation could help both parties get to the root of the problem. Let go. If the behavior persists, termination may be your best option and should happen immediately if the problem is serious enough. In some cases, a two-week notice can allow the employee to further damage the culture of your workplace, Don t wait for a problem to arise to set up procedures to protect your business. Small business owners should consult with their lawyer to make sure their company is following the proper procedures. This will also protect you against workforce claims from disgruntled former employees.
