If discussion is desired, that item may be removed and considered separately. 1. BOARD OF TRUSTEES MINUTES APPROVAL Approve the Library Board of Trustees meeting minutes of September 24, 2018. 2. FINANCIAL REPORT Approve the Financial Reports for the month of September 2018. 3. GIFTS Accept gifts received by the San Mateo Public Library during the month of September 2018. PUBLIC COMMENT Persons wishing to comment on any item not appearing on the agenda may submit to the Executive Assistant a Request to Speak form. State law prevents the Board from taking action on any matter not on this agenda. Comments may be referred to staff for further review. Persons speaking will not have their name recorded in the minutes. COMMUNICATION 4. The Library received notification OLD BUSINESS 5. LIBRARY SERVICES AGREEMENT WITH TOWN OF HILLSBOROUGH 2018-19 City Librarian Ben Ocón will share updated information about the per capita for library services in the Peninsula Library System by library jurisdictions. 6. FUND-A-NEED ADVISEMENT (2018-19 AUTHOR GALA) The Library Board will continue with providing advisement to staff on fund-a-need suggestions that can be presented to the Library Foundation and Literary Society for their consideration.
NEW BUSINESS 7. VISIT BY INCOMING CITY MANAGER DREW CORBETT Incoming City Manager Drew Corbett recently appointed by the City Council (effective upon the retirement of current City Manager Larry Patterson) will visit to get acquainted with the Library Board. Mr. Corbett will address the upcoming vacancy of the City Librarian position and will seek advisement from the Board on the selection of the new City Librarian. 8. OUTREACH VEHICLE PROJECT UPDATE Adriana Valencia, Supervising Librarian, will share an update on the Outreach Vehicle Project. 9. RECAP OF EVENT HOW WILL AI IMPACT ME NOW & IN 5 YEARS? Library Board members will share thoughts on the event, How will AI Impact Me Now and in 5 Years? Board members will also discuss the Board representation on the Collaboration Committee for the next year. REPORTS 10. LIBRARY BOARD PRESIDENT 11. CITY LIBRARIAN 12. AGENDA TOPICS FOR FUTURE BOARD MEETINGS Mr. Ocón will share a calendar of forthcoming agenda topics; and Library Board members will propose agenda topics for future Library Board meetings. The payment for library services for one-third of the population of Hillsborough to the City of San Mateo based at the per capita rate of $64.07 is $246,541.
City Librarian s Report October 2018 ESL City Government Academy On Sept. 27 th, the Library hosted the ESL City Government Academy in collaboration with the San Mateo Adult School. Twenty-five students enrolled in the English as a Second Language program visited the Main Library to hear presentations by staff on the many resources available to them at the Library. The Academy is a collaboration to promote an awareness of City government and services in San Mateo to new immigrants. Librarian Eric Groth shows ESL students how to use the Library s online Catalog Friends Furever (featuring State Senator Jerry Hill) The Children s Library will host a special program-- Friends Furever, Celebrating Kindness to Animals on Tuesday, October 23 rd at 4:00 p.m. in the Book Bubble of the Main Library. The program will feature State Senator Jerry Hill who will read Saving Travis: A Rescue Story by Rhea Sampson and published by the Palo Alto Humane Society.
