Syllabus Michigan World History and Geography, Semester B Course Overview This course is designed to strengthen your understanding of world history and geography. The first unit reviews the major political revolutions that shaped the world. The second unit focuses on the impact nationalism and imperialism have had on the world. In the third unit, you will study the causes, effects, and major events of the World Wars. The fourth unit explains the growth of communism and the development of Cold War politics. You will also study decolonization in Asia and Africa and the rise of nationalism. In the last unit, you will learn about the effects of globalization and the global threat of terrorism. Course Goals By the end of this course, you will be able to do the following: Assess the impact of the Scientific Revolution on worldviews and the Industrial Revolution. Analyze the causes of the Enlightenment and its role in the American Revolution. Describe the rise of nationalism in Europe, and analyze the impact of imperialism in Africa, India, and the Middle East. Analyze the causes, effects, and major events of the World Wars. Describe the global challenges in the period between the wars. Explain the causes and major events of the Cold War and the growth of communism in the Soviet Union and China. Analyze the effects of decolonization in Africa and the political and economic shifts throughout Latin America in the late twentieth century. Explain how world economies have become interdependent in the contemporary age. Evaluate the benefits and challenges of living in a global society. General Skills To participate in this course, you should be able to do the following: Complete basic operations with word processing software, such as Microsoft Word or Google Docs. Understand the basics of spreadsheet software, such as Microsoft Excel or Google Spreadsheets, but having prior computing experience is not necessary. Perform online research using various search engines and library databases. Communicate through email and participate in discussion boards. For a complete list of general skills that are required for participation in online courses, refer to the Prerequisites section of the Plato Student Orientation document, found at the beginning of this course. Unit 1: The Age of Revolutions In the first unit, you will explore the Scientific Revolution and the Enlightenment. You will also learn about the American Revolution, the Industrial Revolution, and revolutions in France and Latin America. 2
