ABOUT THE SEMINAR Litigating Equality: Are Human Rights Effective? All human beings are born free and equal in Dignity and Rights Human rights are the basic rights and freedoms that belong to every person in the world, from birth until death. They apply regardless of where you are from, what you believe or how you choose to live your life. They can never be taken away, although they can sometimes be restricted. These basic rights are based on values like dignity, fairness, equality, respect and independence. But human rights are not just abstract concepts they are defined and protected by law. To reinforce the doctrine of human rights and its values and to maintain international peace and security, the United Nations Organization was
founded in the year 1945 having UN Charter as its foundational treaty. Recognizing the universality of human rights the UN General Assembly has adopted Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR) in the year 1948. Since the adoption of UDHR, global human rights regime has become so well established. In addition, discussion on strategies to tackle the human rights issues emerged as a result of development in science and technology has been initiated. However the emergence of globalization makes it necessary for revitalizing the strategies and plan of actions for the protection and promotion of human rights. Due to globalization the national states are forced to withdraw from certain areas meant for social welfare. The values of democracy and human rights are being suppressed.
