HISTORICAL SKETCH In 1916, Indiana residents celebrated the state s one hundred years of being part of the United States. They participated in numerous festivities throughout the year. A Centennial Celebration Committee was established in an effort to provide educational and historical insight into the state s first 100 years. The committee collected important artifacts documenting the history of the state and it created memorials to Indiana historic sites such as Abraham Lincoln s boyhood home in Spencer County. Attempts to explore future possibilities of the state were manifested through the establishment of a system of state parks, which was initiated with the purchase of land that became Turkey Run State Park. Several counties provided parades, pageants and reenactments of their histories. Many Indianans expressed their feelings of excitement and patriotism through poems, hymns and songs. A parade of soldiers, musicians and performers were seen marching around downtown Indianapolis during the state celebration in observance of Admission Day. Speeches were given by Governor Samuel M. Ralston and Centennial Celebration Committee member James Woodburn. A medal was awarded to an Indiana daughter, Janet Scudder, whose reputation was internationally known for her sculptures. Many of these events were documented in period newspapers. Sources: Materials in the collection The Indiana Centennial, 1916: a Record of the Celebration of the One Hundredth Anniversary of Indiana s Admission to Statehood. Indianapolis: Indiana Historical Commission, 1919. Indiana Centennial. Clippings File, Indiana Historical Society. SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE This collection contains two items pertaining to the Indiana State Centennial Celebration and the Committee delegated to implement it. The first is a letter from Frank B. Wynn to Jacob Piatt Dunn. He was requesting Dunn modify a passage from section 12 of a proposed Legislative Bill concerning the preparations for the celebration. The letter includes the names of the 13 committee members selected from each district within Indiana to be a part of the Centennial Celebration Committee. The second piece is the proposed bill by the State Legislature indicating the provisions by which the celebrations would be executed. The bill authorized the Celebration Committee and empowered them to prepare the detailed plans for the celebrations. This included provisions for obtaining Indiana history exhibits, initiating a system of state parks; and awarding prizes and medals to build public interest; along with other duties.
