Covina-Valley Unified School District Board of Education Minutes - Regular Meeting May 16, 2016 Meeting was called to order by the presiding officer, Richard M. Root, Chief Business Officer Elizabeth Eminhizer, Assistant Superintendent, Educational Services Pledge of Allegiance Keani Emiko Chavez, a student from Rowland Elementary School, and Destiny Pacheco, a student from Manzanita Elementary School, led the Pledge of Allegiance and shared highlights about Rowland and Manzanita. Adoption of Agenda Motion by Mrs. Maulucci, seconded by Mrs. Frasquillo, and unanimously carried that the agenda be adopted as submitted. Recognitions The Board of Education recognized students from Covina, Northview, and South Hills High Schools, recipients of the Floyd Myrick Awards. The Board of Education recognized senior scholars from Covina, Northview, and South Hills High Schools. The Board of Education recognized K-5 music teachers, recipients of The Mr. Holland s Opus Foundation Grant at Manzanita and Rowland Elementary Schools. The Board of Education recognized staff from Las Palmas Middle School for receiving the AVID National Demonstration School designation. -1-
The Board of Education recognized student-athletes and coaches for spring sports from Covina, Northview, and South Hills High Schools. Mr. White adjourned the meeting for a brief break at 8:00 p.m. and reconvened in regular session at 8:05 p.m. Public Comments A community member spoke about a 626 Golden Streets event taking place in the community. She invited the Board members and Covina-Valley students to attend the event. Board Presentation - Piper Jaffray Tim Carty of Piper Jaffray presented information to the Board regarding the refinancing of bond debt, Qualified Zone Academy Bonds (QZAB), and the next issuance of Measure CC funds. Superintendent s Report Dr. Sheehan thanked everyone for making it a great night. Tonight summarizes the great year Covina-Valley has had. Dr. Sheehan announced that there will be a First Responder s recognition reception tomorrow to show appreciation. District administrators and Board members will attend a Budget Workshop this week. Music Festivals will be held at Azusa Pacific University next week. The District Leadership Team will participate in CERT training to prepare them in the event of an emergency. Board Members Comments Mrs. Maulucci enjoyed hearing the fifth grade students speak tonight. It was also great to see all of the excellent students who were recognized tonight. Mr. Kemp appreciated the students staying throughout all of the recognitions. Mrs. Frasquillo enjoyed having all the schools together to present awards so that parents can see what other schools are accomplishing. Public Hearings Mr. White called for a public hearing at 8:32 p.m. regarding the adoption of the findings required for an energy conservation program and to consider approval of an Energy Services Contract under Government Code Sections 4217.10-4217.18.
