Course Overview explores the people, events, and ideas that have shaped history from the classic civilizations (so that we may see how they influenced the Enlightenment) to the present day. Students will study such topics as exploration, the world wars, immigration, and globalization. Students will also gain practice in research using technology and writing through various projects. In addition to the default course program, this course includes alternate lessons, projects, essays, and tests for use in enhancing instruction or addressing individual needs. Foundations of Enlightenment: Students will discover that societies are made up of various cultures that share many things in common. Students will examine the foundations of the Enlightenment, as well as the start of Imperialism. Standing on the Shoulders of Giants: Students will show an understanding of the exploration and colonization by European countries. They will examine the history of Imperialism, the Renaissance, and the Reformation. Political Revolutions and Imperialism: Students will explore the common need to be free in these lessons about different revolutions throughout the world. They will also come to understand that the American Revolution inspired many others. Industrial Revolutions: Students will explain how the Industrial Revolution began in England and ended up affecting the entire world. Early Twentieth Century: Students will understand that as the Twentieth Century dawned, Imperialism was still going strong, and the War to End All Wars was on its way. Causes and Effects of the World Wars: Students will recall the reasons for and effects of the Second World War, including independence movements and the Cold War. The 20th Century Since 1945: Promises and Paradoxes: Students will explore the world s reactions to Imperialism, look at the culture shaped by society and politics, and visit the trend toward globalism. The 20th Century Since 1945: Asia, Africa, The Middle East: Students will explore the effects of imperialism and the end of the Cold War in Asia, Africa, and the Middle East. World History Across the Eras: Students will understand the implications of overpopulating the earth and what might be done about it. The effects of a global economy and different types of markets are also examined. Turning Points in Human History: Students will describe the major issues affecting nations today, including globalization, population growth, pandemics, and immigration.
