President's Message This is my first message as president of the CVWA. I want to start by thanking all those who keep the wheels turning in this group whether you have a larger responsibility such as being a Board member, or whether you help in a smaller way. I m grateful to all of you. And, along that line of thought, we need a volunteer. Immediately. Hey, you! Yes, you, sitting there. We need someone to set up the sound system at meetings. You don t have to store the equipment, that stays at the school. We just need someone to pull it out and set it up so that our members and guests can hear our speakers presentations. Is that too much to ask? I didn t think so. Thanks for volunteering. Second, one of my goals is to make sure that the club has a supportive, welcoming, warm environment. For example, if you hear of someone who is ill or injured (Stephen? Fortunately, not this time!) or has had surgery, let me know. We want to make sure that they know that the club cares about them. I m working on a survey that I will present at the next meeting. We re planning the programs for this upcoming year. I want to make sure that the programs we plan include the topics about which you want to learn more. Another idea is that I would like CVWA to have a closer relationship with the Woodworking classes at the Conejo Valley Adult School. If you have attended any of these classes, would you check in with me? I m looking for someone who wouldn t mind meeting with the teacher to plan a time to make a brief presentation to the students about CVWA. I think some of these budding woodworkers would be interested in joining us, if they knew more about the club. Have you made your Kitchen Item for the upcoming challenge? I m looking forward to seeing your creativity in action. Here s to a great year, full of good workmanship, improving skills, and good friendship! From The Editor Three Cheers for our outgoing President, Arlen Handberg! This is Arlen s 2 nd time as Club President. Arlen has done and continues to do as much as anyone ever has for the Club. Arlen: We sure do appreciate you! On A Personal Note Our director, Ed Reed, suffered a mild heart attack in January and is on the mend. In fact, he continued to coordinate the tour of Anderson Guitar Works and attended the event. Long time Club Member Vince Vlasic is recovering nicely from his hip replacement. Vickie Denton recently had a hip replacement and is home recovering. We wish them all a complete and speedy recovery! Club Gatherings Don t forget: Besides the regular monthly meeting, the Club has several get togethers every month. 2 nd Tuesday: Just Coffee, 10:00 to 11:30am, Oaks Mall Food Court 3 rd Wednesday: Breakfast, 9:00 to 10:00am, Pickles Newbury Park, 1940 Newbury Road 4 th Friday: Breakfast, 9:00 to 10:00am, Denny's Camarillo All of these are great opportunities to meet with fellow woodworkers to have coffee or a meal and swap stories. Ed Reed arranged the February tour of Anderson Guitar works. Tom Anderson showed us his factory and gave an inspired talk! His passion and skill really showed. His company produces a truly beautiful musical instruments that are actually a works of art! February Program Issue #269 Page 4
