FRIENDS OF THE PATTERSON LIBRARY MINUTES CALL TO ORDE: The meeting was called to order by Pres., Marilynne Allen, at 1:05 PM in the library building. MEMBERS PRESENT: Marilynne Allen, Chris Bingham, Margaret Castro, Trudy degroot, Cathie Ferreira, Sher Grotts, Sue Henderson, Maggie Lewis, Ronna Lubker, Sandy McDowell, Donna Miller, Judy Mullins, Kay Swift and Librarian, Kelly Thompson New Members: Marilynne welcomed two new members. They are Sher Grotts and Donna Miller. LIBRARIAN S REPORT: Kelly, Patterson Librarian, showed us a key to my heart necklace, which was the children s craft for February for which she bought supplies out of funds from FOL. She also passed around new signs she had purchased for the children s area, which also came out of the same funds. She had no current requests at this time. MINUTES: The minutes of the January meeting were read and approved. TREASURER S REPORT: Treas., Sue Henderson, reported that the balance as of January 12, 2009 was $4,631.75. After expenses and deposits (including the money for the mosaic repair and book sale deposits), the balance as of today,, is $4,648.53. This amount does not include the $80 in the cash box and the $2,128.49 CD ($2,000 CD plus interest). http://www.stanislauslibrary.org 1

CORRESPONDENCE: Marilynne said she has had verbal thank yous and commendations from various people in the community on what a good job the Friends of the Library are doing. Joland Schut thought it was a very good idea to include the previous year s accomplishments in our membership letters. OLD BUSINESS: Friends Workshop-Modesto Library: Marilynne reminded us again about the county-wide FOL group workshop on March 14, 2009. In addition to the members who already plan to go, Kay and Donna said they would also like to go. CALTAC Workshop-San Francisco: This is a meeting of commissioners and trustees of all California libraries to be held in San Francisco on February 28. Sue and Sandy are planning to attend. Modesto Library Staff Meeting: Marilynne and Sandy attended this meeting at which Vanessa gave an update on everything pertaining to the county library system. Insurance For Our FOL Group: Judy had checked about getting insurance through FOLUSA. To get the insurance, we first have to join FOLUSA, which is $40 to join the group. Then the insurance will cost $200 per year for a shared policy up to $3,000.000 for a Friends group up to 100 members. Sandy made a motion that we join FOLUSA; it was seconded by Chris and Trudy and passed. http://www.stanislauslibrary.org 2

OLD BUSINESS (continued): Treasurer s Audit: Sandy usually audits the treasurer s books with her. Marilynne said that in view of the Apricot Fiesta treasurer s problems, she is wondering if we should hire a professional auditor. Chris said we could get an auditor for about $50. There was discussion and Sandy said she will ask Vanessa about what she thinks we should do. Patterson Mosaic: The mosaic has been finished and everyone agreed that it looks beautiful. We received the bill from Patterson Glass for the Plexiglas. They also put a frame around it. Marilynne asked Kay if she would check with the Irrigator and see if they will come and take another picture of the finished product. Landscaping Update: Marc McGuire has done part of the sprinkler drip system and has given us a bill for the supplies he has purchased so far. He has not bought the pots for the plants yet. NEW BUSINESS: Book Sale: Our next book sale will be April 22, 24 and 27. We need to get some announcements about it in the paper, community calendar, etc. Marilynne said Dave Hohl will take the unsold books and the children s books will be given to the pantry. Margaret mentioned that someone else besides the pantry may want them. Sandy said she would check to see if anyone else might want these books. http://www.stanislauslibrary.org 3

NEW BUSINESS (continued): Marilynne mentioned that at our last book sale she found two 1918 spellers which she discovered would sell online for $22.95. She said she took them to Yesterday s Book Shop and they didn t want them. She asked if anyone who does e-bay transactions would like to try to sell them. Donna said she would take them; so she paid Sue $22 each for the two spellers. Newman Friends: Newman Friends of the Library are having a Scholastic Book Sale Feb. 19, 20 & 21. The schools in Patterson have a Scholastic Book Sale twice a year; so it is not something we need to do. County Library Annual Report: Vanessa Czopek, County Librarian, will present the Library Annual Report at the City Council Meeting on March 17, at 7:00 PM. Marilynne and Kelly will attend and anyone else who is interested may attend. COMMENTS: Sandy took FOL membership forms to City Hall and put in everyone s in-box. She also has made announcements at city council meetings, so far to no avail. Sandy got a brief e-mail from one of the soldiers to whom she sent books. She is getting ready to send another batch http://www.stanislauslibrary.org 4

of books soon. Her grandson said everyone shares the books. Sue made a motion that we reimburse Sandy for postage for mailing these books. It was seconded by Chris and passed. COMMENTS: (continued): Kay suggested that since the Historical Society and the Lions Club were so generous in helping pay for the mosaic repair that we should ask a representative from each to come and see the finished mosaic and perhaps get a picture and an article put in the Irrigator. Marilynne asked Kay to set this up on February 23 at 1:00 PM. Sher had an idea for a Centennial activity. She said we could have a reception to invite people to see the mosaic and at the same time they could see where the library is located. There was discussion about this but nothing definite was decided. It was noted that Gordon Barbosa is on the Centennial Committee and that if we decide to do this, perhaps he could put some advertising for it on TV or on line. Sandy said she received an e-mail message inviting her to join an e-mail FOL group. If anyone is interested, the e-mail address is: berattles@gmail.com. The website for the Stanislaus County Library FOL Group which has upcoming Friends events, etc. is: http://groups.google.com/group/stanfol. The meeting was adjourned at 2:20 PM. The next meeting will be March 9, 2009. Respectfully submitted, http://www.stanislauslibrary.org 5
