Orientation Program Intended for prospective participants, parents, guidance counselors, educators, and sponsoring organizations 2002 Badger, Inc. 2002, 2013, Inc

Orientation Agenda Welcome to! This presentation will expose you to many aspects of including the following The history and purpose of the program; The general program outline and schedule; The selection and sponsorship process how it works; Why you should become involved and participate; What participants should bring; Information for parents. 2002 Badger, Inc. 2002, 2013, Inc

History The American Legion started the program in 1935 when Illinois chartered the first program. It was organized to counter the Fascist inspired Young Pioneer Camps of the time. Although times have changed, the American Legion still feels strongly that our nation s young men and women should be knowledgeable about, and exposed to, the rights and privileges, the duties and the responsibilities of American citizenship. Currently, 49 states operate programs and although similar they differ due to their particular state and local governments. For each there is also an equivalent Girls program sponsored by the American Legion Auxiliary. 2002 Badger, Inc. 2002, 2013, Inc

History was established in 1940 and has graduated nearly 20,000 young men throughout its history. It is currently rated as one of the best of all the programs with roughly 435 young men attending each year. The counselors and staff all volunteers are members of the American Legion, Sons of the American Legion, outstanding citizens or former participants, and memebers of the Patrol. They return because of their Positive experience and their desire to contribute to the program. 2002 Badger, Inc. 2002, 2013, Inc

How Does It Work? is a seven day long experience which literally creates a 51 st state. The idea behind the program is that the best way to learn something is to experience it first-hand. brings together the best young men from throughout to provide the environment in which this can happen. The following slides describe it in more detail 2002 Badger, Inc. 2002, 2013, Inc

Sunday ~ Day 1 Each young man arrives and is assigned to a city becoming a citizen of that city for the week. Four cities make a county and 4 counties complete the state. The first day is primarily to get settled in, meet one s city, and start organizing the two party political system with the assistance of the city counselor. 2002 Badger, Inc. 2002, 2013, Inc

Sunday ~ Day 1 Sunday evening the program begins to move quickly as the candidates for city offices are selected by each city political party and they then begin to campaign for their office. Each city also names their representatives to the Party Executive Committees which will organize Monday. The first day is very busy but rewarding 2002 Badger, Inc. 2002, 2013, Inc

Monday ~ Day 2 City government is in the spotlight as the city elections are held and the newly elected officials begin running their cities. New laws or ordinances are passed and city officials are appointed to enforce them. The schedule has recreation time. County parties are also organized during the day and party candidates for each county office are nominated. 2002 Badger, Inc. 2002, 2013, Inc

Everyday Activities Each day the Color Guard presents the American Flag and. Afternoons offer instructional sessions in law enforcement; city, county and state government; court procedures and many other subjects. The evening sessions begin with a devotional period conducted by the Citizens of. 2002 Badger, Inc. 2002, 2013, Inc

Tuesday ~ Day 3 Tuesday ushers in county day. County elections are conducted and the newly elected county officials are sworn in. Two levels of government are now fully functional. The first conventions of the Nationalist and Federalist Political Parties are held. Members of the House and Senate have been sworn in and the legislature is now organized and functioning. 2002 Badger, Inc. 2002, 2013, Inc

Wednesday ~ Day 4 Some of the most sought after positions at GBS are the state level offices especially the office of governor. After petitioning for their party s nomination, candidates address the citizens of their party to win their vote. The primary election is held within each party to determine the final slate of candidates for the general election. Primary winners are announce during the Wednesday evening session. Other daily activities continue as usual including city sports teams competing, laws being enforced and court cases being heard. 2002 Badger, Inc. 2002, 2013, Inc

Thursday ~ Day 5 Thursday is truly the high point of the week. The election boards conduct the general election, count the ballots, and the new GBS Governor is officially elected. Thursday evening the newly elected state officials are sworn into office and the Governor of delivers his inaugural address. 2002 Badger, Inc. 2002, 2013, Inc

Friday ~ Day 6 The elected state officials continue their work; the Governor makes his appointments, the Senate and Assembly prepare bills which they hope will become laws, and the Supreme Court Justices hear cases. A special guest addresses the session. 2002 Badger, Inc. 2002, 2013, Inc

Saturday ~ Day 7 Citizens perform their last duties as the mayor, county exec., sheriff, city clerk, or governor at GBS as they prepare to leave. Graduation exercises reflect on the week, Nation Senators are announced, Honor Graduates receive their recognition and final reports from the state officials are presented. The last official duty is the final retirement of the American Flag. Session closed! Arriving as strangers, departing as friends. 2002 Badger, Inc. 2002, 2013, Inc

Citizen Testimonials At the end of each session, citizens are requested to provide feedback, both positive and negative, so that the program can be continually improved. Here are some examples of citizen feedback I learned a great deal about our government and how things operate at the city and state level. I also learned the value of patriotism and the veterans who fought for our country. Thanks for all the things you guys taught my son last week... I believe after last week he understands why I am so strongly opinionated about some things, the Flag, the Corps, the freedom we have and how so many people take it for granted etc, etc. This has been one of the best weeks of my life. To all the counselors, volunteer staff and the American Legion, thank you! 2002 Badger, Inc. 2002, 2013, Inc

Nation Just as the programs provide young men the chance to experience state level government, the American Legion Nation program provides that same experience at the federal level. Each program selects two exceptional young men from their program and they represent their state at Nation; held in Washington, D.C. in July. Nation participants enjoy many privileges during the program including meeting the President of the United s. Nation Senators are shown here as they lay a wreath at the tomb of the unknown soldier at Arlington National Cemetery. 2002 Badger, Inc. 2002, 2013, Inc

Why Attend GBS? Perhaps you have been selected to attend GBS Why should you attend instead of working, going to other camps or conferences? This can be a tough decision because summers can be very valuable. Here are a few reasons we feel GBS is a excellent experience - one not to pass up. The experience is truly unique. The best young men from using a college campus for a hands-on program ~ the learning and growing potential is limited only by your imagination. Due to the fact that the program is highly regarded by educators, attendance looks very favorable during college entrance, scholarship applications, and resumes; Attendance makes you eligible for special scholarships through the American Legion; Lifelong friendships are very often built during the program; Thousands of others have attended and left with experiences of a lifetime perhaps the question is why wouldn t you choose to attend? 2002 Badger, Inc. 2002, 2013, Inc

Getting Involved Becoming involved is the very best way to get the most out of GBS and to have the most fun. However, running for an elected office is not the only way to get involved. Here are some of the other ways to contribute during the week Newspaper: There is always a need for more writers and artists to report on any news from their city or county and to provide art work for the front page. 2002 Badger, Inc. 2002, 2013, Inc

Getting Involved Choir: The choir performs during the Graduation Exercise and often highlights soloists during some selections. Color Guard: Each morning assembly begins with the posting of the American flag. The color guard (or honor guard) posts the flag in a ceremonial and respectful manner. Athletics: City Party competitions are held in 4 sports - volleyball, basketball, touch football, and softball. Competition points are compiled by city, county and party affiliations. 2002 Badger, Inc. 2002, 2013, Inc

What GBS Is Not can be a fantastic experience but it can also be a great disappointment if those attending expect the program to be something it is not. creates a learning, growing, maturing environment built around citizen interaction, patriotism, and realizing what citizenship can mean. is not An athletic summer camp; sports are played but are not the focus. A summer camp to get away from the summer job and the parents for a week. A week of passing time and hanging with other students your age; the week is active, rewarding, and as valuable as you choose to make it. can be an experience you will never forget but make it for the right reasons. 2002 Badger, Inc. 2002, 2013, Inc

Selection Process Many different organizations sponsor young men to. All young men attending must be certified by a local American Legion Post. Young men are eligible to attend if they have just completed their junior year in high school (or equivalent home schooling; are a citizen or legal resident of The United s; are good students, well adjusted, and show qualities of leadership in their school and community. The GBS selection process can vary greatly throughout the state. Often local school authorities recommend candidates to a local American Legion Post. The final selection is made by an American Legion Post. To learn more about the selection process in your area, please speak with your school guidance counselor or local American Legion Post. 2002 Badger, Inc. 2002, 2013, Inc

Bring a pillow, sheets, blankets or a sleeping bag for the residence hall beds. Also bring personal items like tooth brush, soap, bath towel, contact supplies, cell phone, an alarm clock, stamps, etc. Meals and supplies have been paid for by your sponsor but there are items that you may want to purchase so bring some money. No sandals will be allowed outside the dorms without heel straps. Cell phones and CD players may be used in the dorm areas only. 2002 Badger, Inc. 2002, 2013, Inc

What Not To Bring There are some items that you are better off not bringing to GBS. Some items you will not be allowed to use and some are not worth bringing. Please do not bring the following Television, DVD/VCR player, or video consoles of any type; Excessive amounts of money or valuables. There is a bank that can hold valuables during the week but as a general rule, try to limit the valuables that you bring. Campaign materials from outside GBS. Materials used for campaigning are closely monitored to ensure that no one has an unfair advantage. Materials from outside GBS will NOT be allowed. Computers. There are no aspects of GBS which benefit from bringing your computer and the residence hall computer networks will be unavailable during the week due to upgrades. Room keys are not issued and rooms cannot be locked. 2002 Badger, Inc. 2002, 2013, Inc

Graduates Some better known graduates of GBS are: Senator Sam Nunn Past National Commander of The American Legion Robert Turner Some graduates of other programs are: President Bill Clinton Vice President Dick Cheney Michael Jordan Tom Brokaw Ambassador Alan Keyes 2002 Badger, Inc. 2002, 2013, Inc

Visit Our Web Site Our goal with our web site is to not only allow people to learn more about but also as a resource for parents during the session and afterward for citizens.
