MEET THE 2017 ALA GIRLS NATION PRESIDENT AND VICE PRESIDENT! PRESIDENT Melody Wang Georgia A rising senior at George Washington Comprehensive High School, Melody Wang of Marietta, GA, was elected by her peers to serve as the 71st President of ALA. Wang is involved in student government, Model United Nations, as well as Social Studies National Honor Society. When not busy with academics, she finds time to volunteer with the Cobb County Public Library and Atlanta Community Food Bank. Wong has made several achievements, including winning the United States Figure Skating Double Gold Medalist Award, has been chosen as a National Advanced Placement Scholar, and is a Georgia Music Educators Association All State Piano winner. VICE PRESIDENT Danica Moon Kentucky Danica Moon of Lexington, KY, an outstanding leader and rising senior from Tates Creek High School, was elected vice president of the 71st session of ALA. Moon is active in her high school in many ways, including a member of the orchestra and Academic Team. In her limited free time, she gives back to the Girl Scouts and Oasis Community Church. Moon has received many awards that include Varsity Captain of the Academic Team and became a featured poet in the February 2016 issue of Teen Howl, a poetry publication. TWILIGHT TATTOO Twilight Tattoo is an hour-long, live-action military pageant featuring soldiers from The 3rd U.S. Infantry Regiment (The Old Guard) and the U.S. Army Band Pershing s Own. Today the senators experienced a glimpse into American war history through reenactments, music, the fife and drum corps and drill team. Soldiers in battle have guided on the colors for centuries, and in today s Army soldiers still carry the colors in the form of a patch on their right shoulder, featuring the U.S. Flag in reverse. The Old Guard s Continental Color Guard was established to recall the history of the regiment. THE WHITE HOUSE Today, the senators had the honor of meeting the 45th President of the United States Donald Trump. The ALA and TAL Boys Nation senators took group photos in the Rose Garden and some of the senators were able to shake the hand of the President. President Trump shared greetings and congratulated the students on the job they ve done and all that they have achieved at a young age. He ended his remarks by reminding students to Never quit. Never give up always do what you love. The 2017 TAL Boys Nation and ALA president and vice president at the White House. Omarosa Manigault, director of communications for the Office of Public Liaison, took selfies with the senators.
