The radio airwaves seem relatively calm after being pushed and pulled so hard during the many, many months of political campaigning. As usual, public broadcasting was quite illuminating in the fuller firmament of political reporting. Also as usual, it was a little awkward to have Big Bird (funding for public broadcasting) thrust back into the campaign limelight again. KUNM s News Department did a strong job of reporting on the campaigns, most notable with the Voices Behind the Vote series. I was pleased that we could showcase the diversity and complexity of people here in New Mexico who voted in November s election. The series is well worth your time if you missed hearing all of the segments. I am already missing the KUNM Conservation Beat reporting we featured all year on KUNM. In November, we exhausted our funds to pay Reporters Megan Kamerick and Laura Paskus to focus exclusively on conservation and environmental issues. Our original grant in 2011 from the New Mexico Community Foundation was for $48,500. These funds provided for salary, benefits, travel expenses, and some recording Laura Paskus equipment for a full-time reporter to report on Conservation issues in New Mexico. Sidsel Overgaard was our first Conservation Beat reporter. When she moved with her family to New York, we were fortunate to be able to bring on Megan and Laura (both on a part-time basis) to continue the good work of covering Conservation. All three reporters provided you with high-quality reporting from across the state. To date, we have not found a replacement source for funding Conservation reporting. For certain, we will continue to provide you with important local and regional conservation stories, just not with the same constant focus that a funded Reporting position can bring to our airwaves. If the name Megan Kamerick sounds familiar to you, it s quite possible you know her from the Public Square Continued on Page 4

continued from Page 3 program on KNME New Mexico PBS. As host of the program, Megan fosters civic dialogue on important issues of the day. Megan has also been selected to be one of the featured speakers at the TEDx ABQWomen event on December 1st at the South Broadway Cultural Center. Per the program, Megan asserts there is an Megan Kamerick urgent call to action for women to speak up and be represented in the media. There is a phenomenon called girl pause. When asked questions, women tend to hesitate for three reasons: they think about the questions and want to give the right answers, they don t want to engage in the conversation, or they don t want to look stupid for being wrong. Also, in November, KUNM Volunteer Katie Stone, host and producer of KUNM s Children s Hour, was named as a recipient in this year s Women in Technology Awards. The New Mexico Technology Council gives the annual awards to outstanding women in technology, business and education. This year, 32 women from around the state were Katie Stone nominated by their peers and a panel of three judges outstanding women in technology themselves chose the nine winners. Katie s work with young people every Saturday morning is a real, live broadcast adventure fit for the young and young at heart. Make a date to check in by 9:00 a.m. each Saturday with The Children s Hour. [ 4

WINNING!!! By Mary Oishi, KUNM Development Director Dear Ms. Oishi- Thank you for the passes to the Moab Folk Festival. It was a fantastic musical weekend, and my husband and I are grateful to have been able to attend. Enclosed is a list of performers. I have put a * beside the names of our favorites. We hope that you will give them air time on the appropriate programs. Sincerely, Photo Credit: Kyle Zimmerman Photography Ruth Sabiers Charlie Sheen made the headline to this article a national joke. But we all really love winning, which is why we introduced some FUN in our FUNdraising by adding pledge drive prizes on occasion. I heard from Ruth Sabiers, one winner of the Moab Folk Festival weekend passes that we gave away on the first day of the Fall Pledge Drive. She really enjoyed her prize! This is what she said, which I am printing here with her permission: great deals, and the salsa by Ivon Ulibarri and Café Mocha will be SMOKIN! If you received a personal invitation, you can come with a guest, but you must let us know you re coming no later than 5 pm on Friday, November 30th! Call me at 505-277-8006 or email membersfree@kunm.org. Your name will be at Will Call. You can also reserve tickets at the auction site. There s plenty of information there about the live event. Click through to the auction from www.kunm.org You also have 25 chances to win a pair of VIP tickets to an advance screening of Hitchcock, the movie. (See page 4 for details). Good luck!!! Many people who win pledge drive prizes tell us they never won anything before. A few (like the Mexican necklace winner of the Spring pledge drive and the Chinese silk rug prize winner of the Fall pledge drive) donate their winnings back to add to KUNM s auction. We already have one prize secured for the Spring 2013 pledge drive: (hint: it s from Lobo Scooter in Albuquerque). Regardless of whether you win a prize or tickets or some great bargains in our on-line and live auction, I hope you know what winners we ALL are to have this treasure in New Mexico. The variety of music, as well as news and views, is indeed a rare gift. We all get a cultural and civic education that makes us better citizens and community members. This is why I am SO happy to keep thinking of ways to add FUN to our FUNdraising because I believe that with KUNM, we are ALL WINNING! And that s no joke. [ (Their favorites were Cheryl Wheeler, Tony Furtado Band, Cosy Sheridan, Harry Manx, and Eileen Jewell). Another way we have injected some FUN into KUNM FUNdraising is with the KUNM on-line auction. This year we ve added a LIVE auction too (see page 10 for details). With prizes, you just need the luck of the draw, but with the auction it s more about being an astute bidder than about luck. And when you win an item, you usually doubly win because KUNM benefits AND you get your item for a good deal less than the retail price. I hope you will come to the LIVE auction event at the National Hispanic Cultural Center on Saturday, December 1st. The live and silent auction will be a place to get some 5

Sunday, December 2 6 pm. Radio Theatre: 2010: Space Commander! by Stuart Price. Produced by Britain s The Wireless Theatre Company and recorded live, the concept of 2010: Space Commander! came about after hours of musings on the future of the planet 2010 Space Commander Photo Credit: all-otr.com and us being on it taking into account what we already know about climate change, available resources and population expansion. 2010: Space Commander! tries to create a possible future and looks at it from a few different angles. Monday, December 3 7 pm. Espejos de Aztlan. In 2012, the small city of Sunland Park on the state s southern border became a big news story because of political scandals. Espejos de Aztlan Yet the media sensationalism glossed over long-standing environmental and development problems confronting a largely Spanish-speaking community. In a half-hour documentary, journalist Kent Paterson explores how water, toxic waste, a big landfill and controversies over environmental racism have shaped Sunland Park s history. Hear longtime residents, elected officials, border scholars and environmental justice activists on issues that will define the future of not only of a growing border town, but New Mexico and beyond in the coming years as well. Made possible in part by a grant from the McCune Charitable Foundation. How Children Succeed Photo Credit: paultough.com 8 Friday, December 7 8 am. New Mexico People Places and Ideas: How Children Succeed. Paul Tough, who has written extensively about education, child development and poverty, is the author of the just published book, How Children Succeed. There could not be a more important subject for New Mexico, which just fell from 46th to 49th in overall child welfare. Only Mississippi fares worse on indicators such as high school dropouts, concentrated childhood poverty, and teen drug abuse, etc. So, in our first of 2 related shows, we ask something you may have wondered about: why do some children succeed while others fail? The school system s answer seems to be test scores. But in How Children Succeed, Paul Tough argues that the qualities that matter most have more to do with character: skills like perseverance, curiosity, conscientiousness, optimism, and self-control. Paul will introduce listeners to a new generation of researchers and educators who rely on scientific studies to develop innovative interventions that allow children who grow up in the most painful circumstances to achieve amazing things. So please join host Stephen Spitz as we explore how and why children succeed. Produced with the assistance of Joe Green. 10 pm. Afropop Worldwide: Scenes for Adventurous Armchair Travelers. Winter is coming on time to fire up your travel imagination. Over the years, Afropop s intrepid reporters have brought you vivid audio scenes from Mali to Morocco to Tanzania to Zimbabwe to Cuba to Brazil to Ecuador and beyond (complemented by our Photo Credit: afropop.org gorgeous photo essays). Let your imagination take you with us as we travel to some of the most exciting musical destinations anywhere. The Golden Dreydl Photo Credit: libguides.bgsu.edu Sunday, December 9 6 pm. Radio Theatre. The Golden Dreydl by Ellen Kushner. The story: It is Hanukkah, and Sara, dragged to a party by her mother, finds playing with the dreydls (little spinning tops which are part of Hanukkah s festivities) boring... that is, until Tante Miriam gives her an ancient golden dreydl. During a squabble over possession of the dreydl, the television screen and the dreydl are broken, revealing the magical worlds hidden within both of them. From the broken dreydl a princess emerges who leads Sara on a mythical journey (through the smashed T.V. screen). When the princess is captured by the Demon King, Sara, aided by a Fool, must use all her cunning and courage to outwit the Demon King, rescue the princess, and return home again. Sunday, December 16 6 pm. Radio Theatre: A Very Grimm Christmas. Two works from Britain s The Wireless Theatre Company: Hansel & Gretel, by Sarah Jane Brion, a dark adaptation of the Brothers Grimm tale, Photo Credit: timeout.com and The Brave Little Tailor, an equally dark adaptation of another tale by the Brothers Grimm by Neela Doležalová. Continued from Page 8 Both were recorded live at The Roundhouse in Camden in collaboration with Roundhouse Radio. Friday, December 14 10 pm. Hip Deep Angola 4: The Cuban Intervention in Angola. The 27 year-long Angolan civil war was also an international crossroads of the Cold War, involving Cuba, the Soviet Union, Zaire, South Africa, and the U.S. When Photo Credit: blogs.artinfo.com it was over, Namibia was independent, apartheid had fallen, Angola was a nation, and the Soviet Union had ceased to exist. Through music, interviews, and historical radio clips, this unique program will tell the story of Cuba s massive commitment in Africa, from the Cuban Revolution in 1959 and the subsequent independence of Congo, to the end of the Soviet Union in 1991. We ll talk to Piero Gleijeses, foreign policy specialist at Johns Hopkins University and author of Conflicting Missions: Havana, Washington, and Africa 1959-1976, and to Marissa Moorman, author of the forthcoming Tuning in to Nation: Radio, State Power, and the Cold War in Angola, 1933-2002, who will share with us rare archival recordings of radio broadcasts featuring the voices of Agostinho Neto, Jonas Savimbi, and others. We ll talk to Cuban trovador Tony Pinelli, who traveled in a brigada artística playing music for Cuban soldiers and for Angolans. And from Cuba, Angola, Zaire, and Portugal, we ll hear some of the music that accompanied the struggle. The Rolling Stones Photo Credit: prx.org Saturday, December 15 8 pm. A concerned Doctor Scofield pits his persistence against Captain Underhill s initial reluctance in getting him to take up the case. Lacking any eyewitnesses, including the victim herself, Underhill devises a clever plan to entice the mugger, or muggers, into striking again.
