After graduation, Stewart worked for the Orrville Courier-Crescent, but soon left for an opportunity to cover sports at The Mansfield News-Journal. After two years Stewart moved to Dayton and began working for the Dayton Daily News. At first Stewart still covered sports, but in 1975 he began writing the Off the Beat column three times a week. In 1980 Stewart s column was picked up for syndication and appears in over fifty papers nationwide. The column is a blend of humor and family life, where Stewart discusses his children and step cat. Stewart is also the author of four books. Scope and Content The D.L. Stewart Papers document popular culture and local news stories in Dayton. Through these papers, researchers may gain insight into current events for the past thirty-six years. Series I, newspaper column, contains thirty-six years of D.L. Stewart s column in the Dayton Daily News. From 1975 to 1987 the column was called Off the Beat and sometimes billed as Off the Road and At the Convention for specialty pieces. Since 1988, the column did not have a name. The collection has remained in original order, and the folder divisions were named by the creator, such as syndicated, non-syndicated, family, and non-family.
