Gardening Tips for May May is here and Spring is almost over and the heat of Summer is well on its way. Now is the time to finish up those gardening chores that we have been saying we will do this weekend for past few weeks. If you haven't finished planting your flower beds, then now is the time to do it. Planting now will give your flowers a chance to establish themselves before the heat of Summer hits. Early May is the time to apply your second application of pre-emergent, such as Nitro-Phos "Barricade" or Scott's "Halts". Late May or very early June is the time to apply your lawn fertilizer. I recommend a lower nitrogen fertilizer, such as a 19-4-10. I do not recommend that you apply a "Weed & Feed" this late in the season. Temperatures may already too high and these products could damage your lawn. Grub damage may start showing up this month. Grub damage shows up as a circular patch of yellow or brown grass. If you can easily pull up the dead grass without any roots, this will be grub damage. There are many products on the market to control grubs. Some are "Ortho Max", "Bayer Complete", "GrubEx" and "Season Long Grub Control". These products are applied with a fertilizer spreader and then watered in. May is the time to fertilize many of your flowering plants, including Azaleas, Crepe Myrtles and Hibiscus. Azaleas need a high iron acid forming fertilizer and Hibiscus need a high nitrogen low phosphorus fertilizer. Here is a plant that you may be interested in: it is called Golden Dewdrops or Duranta. The botanical name is Duranta erecta. It is a tropical shrub growing 12 to 15 feet high with dark green foliage and arching branches. It has many small flowers all summer long and comes in flower color of blue, purple and white. My favorite variety is called "Sapphire Showers" which is purple with a lighter edge on the petal. Most years my plant freezes back to the ground, but as soon as temperatures warm up it sprouts and grows very quickly. This plant gets its name of Golden Dewdrops" from the many seeds hanging from the branches which are a pale yellow. Duranta does have some spines so be careful when handling it. If you have any questions, please stop by and see me at Lone Star Ace Hardware or contact me at troy@lonestarace.com. 4 Property Owners Association Newsletter - May 2015 Copyright 2015 Peel, Inc.
