Unit 498 Board of Directors Jackie Lowenberg, President Janelle Van Rensselaer, Vice President A Message from the President Jackie Lowenberg Back in June, when I wrote my first column for the Unitizer, I outlined the new Board s vision for our Unit 498. We as the Board of Directors of this non profit entity were going to strive to provide more bridge playing opportunities in San Mateo County, while providing support to all our Clubs, so that they could also initiate new games and grow participation for our favorite pastime. What has been confusing is the distinction between the Unit and the Clubs. The Unit is an

Lorelei Greenfield, Secretary Fran Gaura, Treasurer Ted Richmond, Immediate Past President Loren Charlton, Director Joanne Lewin, Director, Mentor Program Marge Paccheti, Director, Unit Game Coordinator Marc Renson, Director, Tournament Coordinator oversight entity; it is not a for-profit business. The Unit is expected to offer games that provide different ACBL awards than the Club awards, and thus the Unit sponsors Unit games and Sectionals. Although the object of these games is not profit, we as volunteers, work very hard to provide the best Directors, appealing food, and the most comfortable, clean, and accessible locations for our monthly games--- at the lowest prices possible. As volunteers, we spend unending hours in planning and executing these monthly events -for you, our members. We share in none of the profit, but if we so choose, like at our holiday event and annual meetings, we splurge with our overages for our members and dedicated friends. We buy and maintain equipment as needed for our Unit games, and we provide support to our volunteer teachers and the students of the Peninsula Bridge Program. President's Letter continued: The Clubs, however, are owned privately and are for profit. Our goal is to treat them all fairly and equally. So we allot Unit game sanctions, if we have extra, on an equal basis to our Club owners. Likewise, we allow our Club owners the use of our equipment for their games, such as Bridgemates and server, tables, etc., as long as there aren t conflicts for their use. We applaud and congratulate all of our Club owners for helping us to build a communal spirit. Robert Ng, of the Chinese American Club, deserves special thanks for his support and facilitation of our changes. Wesley May has built his Club at Facebook, without any outside help, and his efforts are well received by a growing group of players. Jennifer Kuhn has beaten medical challenges and continues to build her games and her strength. We send blessings to her for good health. This month she is moving her Wednesday afternoon and evening games to Burlingame, starting January 31. Raad Bunni has directed our large Unit games easily, with his usual panache, and we are delighted that he too is beginning a new 499er/Open game on Thursdays at 11:30, starting on January 25. Patti Frederick can always be counted on to provide celebrations for holidays and special events at the prettiest spot on the bay, the Bayshore

Bridge Center. She and her afternoon games are beloved by her many dear and loyal friends. We are proud to have substantially increased our membership in 2017; we are delighted that our Unit games are consistently growing and well received, and we are thrilled to welcome so many new Club games in January. We anticipate a banner year in San Mateo. Happy New Year!!! Unit Holiday Party
