A publication of the Simi Valley Art Association O C T O B E R 2 0 1 8 Greetings from the SVAA BOARD Hello Everyone- We had a spectacular oil demo by Rob Impellizeri last month, and would like to thank him for sharing his insightful techniques and for the mesmerizing landscape he created. We are looking forward to having a great Open Juried Show this month. We wish to thank all artists who have entered the show, and many thanks to our members who have helped with the show s preparations. Also, our thanks to the wonderfully talented artist Johanna Spinks for the difficult task of selecting this year s winners. The show opens on Friday the 5th. ( Friday hours are 2 to 6, Saturday from 10 to 6, and Sunday 11 to 6.) Reception is on Sunday, Oct. 7th 2:30 to 5:00 with the awards ceremony taking place at 3:30. The show closes on October 26th. Looking forward to photos from the show in November s Newsletter. Thank you! GUEST DEMO ARTIST 6:00 pm on Thursday, November 15, 2018 at our gallery. The SVAA gallery is located at Store #295, 1555 Simi Town Center Way, Simi Valley. Pete Michels Originally from New Jersey, Pete Michels earned a BFA in Illustration from Jersey City State College and an MFA in Animation from UCLA. After landing a job on The Simpsons in 1990, Pete quickly moved up the ranks to become a Director by 1995. Staying on to direct for several more seasons, Pete then accepted a post as Supervising Director on Family Guy. Eventually directing more than a dozen Family Guy episodes, including the direct to video movie Stewie Griffin: The Untold Story. He has since been Supervising Director on Rick and Morty and Disney TV s Future Worm. Pete is currently Supervising Producer at Stoopid Buddy Stoodios in Burbank, CA and is directing new shows for Cartoon Network s Adult Swim. He continues painting watercolor landscapes as time will allow. He and his wife, Emily, have two sons, Sam, and Eddie, and live in Valencia, CA. O C T O B E R 2 0 1 8 2

GALLERY NEWS The SVAA Gallery is located at Store 295, 1555 Simi Town Center Way, Simi Valley north west corner next to Men s Macy s. Don t forget to stop by the Gallery and view this year s Open Juried Show s beautiful artwork and check out the winners. This year we are thinking to implement a few changes that will benefit the association and our gallery: Use of the gallery backroom ( Monday thru Sunday ) as a place for member artists to work and store their art supplies. $20 per mont h Charging for gallery space for shows such as: exhibits, workshops, etc. ( see upcoming events ) Finding sponsers to advertise their local businesses in our newsletter Continued use of the gallery for: gallery artists display space, holding meetings, etc. Any member wishing to become a gallery artist, please contact Donna Snyder at 805-527-6797 or email her at knollsfolly@icloud.com for further information. Reminder: Gallery space requires sitting the gallery as well as being an active member in the association. MEMBERSHIP INFORMATION **Members: Please note that this is the time to renew your SVAA membership. Forms can be found in our gallery or online at our website: www.simivalleyart.org MEMBERSHIP UPDATE: Email info@simivalleyart.org of any email/contact or address changes. The position of President/Membership Chair is currently vacant so anyone who can volunteer to be Membership Coordinator is most welcome. Please contact a Board Member for more information. COMMITTEE MEMBERSHIP UPDATE: Please sign up for the committees. Thanks to all who have signed up and please contact any Board member or Committee chairs for questions MORE MEMBERSHIP INFORMATION: Our fees are $35.00 for yearly dues with $15.00 for the second family member. Students will remain at $15.00 for the year with a $3.00 demo fee unless, accompanied by a paying adult - then they get in for free. Membership dues are non-refundable. A donation of $5.00 for members and $7.00 for non-members is requested at the door for the monthly art demonstration and general meeting. FUNDRAISER ITEMS FOR SALE: Art books, magazines, frames, mat boards ( different sizes ), a Logan 3-step circle #201 mat cutter, a #650/660 mat cutter, sheets of Stonehenge paper 22 x 30, jewelry making items, such as beads, wire, and wire cutters. Do you have any old art books or magazines that you have read or no longer need? Or how about art materials that you know you won t use? Please bring them to our monthly meetings. We will have a table set up where members and guests can buy them for a donation. Clean out that clutter! BOARD MEETINGS: Members are welcome to attend the monthly board meetings.
