Global Thematic Essay Review Rules for writing a GREAT ESSAY!! TEA 1. Answer the basic question, this is your thesis. 2. Give specific evidence to support your thesis. 3. Offer an analysis, connect the thesis & the evidence. You need to explain with a because statement. 1. Theme: Human Rights Freedoms that every person has simply by being born & no government can take away John Locke-life, liberty, & property (18 th century, Enlightenment) U.N. Declaration-all are born free & equal, life, freedom, & safety (1948 after WWII) Since the Enlightenment there has been a belief that people are born with basic rights of life, freedom, and equality. After WWII the United Nations established that all people are born free and equal and entitle to security. 2. Theme: Technology Any idea, invention, or process that makes life easier. Everything from fire & stone tools to smart phones & drones. Technology has allowed people to go from hunting and gathering to travelling into space in the last 10,000 years. 3. Theme: Change Economic Anything that changes how people use resources to survive. The Neolithic Revolution (farming), Commercial Revolution (start of banks & joint stock companies), Exploration (new resources), Industrialization (factories) Page1

4. Theme: Geography The land and climate shape the culture of a region. Deserts & mountains isolate. Rivers allow agriculture. Harbors & smooth coastlines allow trade. 5. Theme: Change People Individuals can change history through their actions & ideas. Abraham, Sidhartha Gautama, Confucius, Julius Caesar, Jesus Christ, Gandhi, Hitler, Vladimir Lenin, Joseph Stalin, etc. 6. Theme: Change Revolutions A quick change. Can be political, economic, social, or technological. 7. Theme: Conflict A disagreement. Can be between nations or groups of people about politics, religion, money, resources, etc. 8. Any time history changes course. Neolithic Revolution, writing, Hammurabi s Code, movable type, Industrialization, Enlightenment, Reformation, etc. 9. Theme: Economics The way people/society uses resources and survives. Traditional=farming Modern=industrial/factories 10. Theme: Change Political A new way or idea about how to keep order and govern people. The earliest societies had monarchies based on strength, heredity, or wealth. 11. Theme: Global Problems Issues facing the whole world like; poverty, terrorism, disease, etc. 12. Theme: Change Religion A new set of beliefs or way to worship. Belief in a single god, or a new prophet, or way to go to heaven. Page3

13. Theme: Movement of People & Goods The migration of people and products from one region to another. People move because factors push them out of where they are and pull them to new areas. Goods move to markets that can afford them. 14. Theme: Political Systems The way people are governed or how order is kept in a society. Earliest forms were monarchies & theocracies. 15. Theme: Belief Systems The way people understand the world around them and guide their behavior. 16. Theme: Cultural & Intellectual Life (Achievements) Any artistic or intellectual advancement. 17. Theme: Change Ideas New ideas that change the way people live and view the world. Could be technology or belief systems or government or economics. 18. Theme: Nationalism Love of your country and/or ethnicity and wanting an independent nation. 19. Theme: Change Challenges to Authority People or ideas that question and weaken the power of the government. Can be based on political, religious, social, or economic ideas. 20. Theme: Change Political Leaders Leaders that bring a new form of government or idea to power. Can be positive or negative. Page5
