LESSON PLAN SET UP Have Indian music playing as students arrive. INCORPORATION 15-20 MIN INTRODUCTION/ INSTRUCTION 10 MIN Take the pictures of the adopted missionary child and the sponsored children from the poly envelopes in the bottom drawer of your carts. Put them on the white board to remind everyone to pray for them during small group. PLEASE REMEMBER to put them back in the poly folder at the end of class. Craft You Are Special to Me Instructions: Give each child a You are Special to Me page to color. Ask them to do this with their best coloring. Make sure they do NOT fill in the special person s name. The person they will be giving this to will be talked about in small group. They should write their own name on the bottom line. Passport Station Instructions: Have each child pick up their passport. New children will need to get a passport and write their name in it and draw their own self-portrait. Give each child a Bhutanese flag and two cultural stickers to place on the Bhutan page (page 6) of the passport. Stamp the page with today s date. The children can also look through the laminated pictures plus any available library books and enjoy an ethnic snack at this station. Well, it s missions week again! Let s pray and we ll get started. Every missions week we each put stickers in our passports and stamp the date on them. (Hold up sample passport or a real one.) Do you know why we do this each time? Everyone who leaves the United States to go to another country has to have a passport. Each missions week we are pretending to travel to another country, so we must carry our passports at all times. Let s find out where we are going today. Today we are traveling to a very small country, smaller than Ohio. It is located in Asia. (Show children Bhutan on the map.) How many hours do you think it would take for us to travel from the Columbus airport to Bhutan? It takes 16 hours! What time do you get up in the morning? Sixteen hours would be from 7 o clock in the morning until 11 o clock at night, when most of your parents probably go to bed. To get to Bhutan you would need to sit and ride in an airplane that entire time! That s a long time, isn t it? Even though Bhutan is a very small country, the climate ranges from hot and humid in the south to cold and covered with snow all year around in the north. How is this possible? How many of you have traveled around Ohio? If we traveled from one end of Ohio to the other, do you think we would have to change from shorts to coats and hats? (No, of course not.) But people in Bhutan have to because the land is low and flat in the south yet as they travel north, they run into mountains that get higher and higher the farther north they go. As they go up the mountains, the air gets colder and colder. Did you know that? That s cool, isn t it? Many years ago when Bhutan became a country, the king tried to bring all the people together. He passed a one nation, one people law. Since they were now one country, the king wanted all the people to believe in the same gods and speak the same language as he did. He tried to force this on the people who lived in the south. The people of the south were very unhappy and let the 2
king know it. Several thousand of them were put in jail. When they were finally able to go home, their homes had been destroyed and their families were forced to go move to another country. They were forced to move to the country of Nepal approximately 400 miles away. They settled along a river at first. Nepal didn t really want them, so 7 refugee camps were built for 106,000 people. (Show map of camps.) A refugee camp is where people go when they have to leave their home. They no longer have a real home anymore. This is where they lived for 17 years. These camps aren t like what we think about when we think of camping. Camping wouldn t be much fun if that was your only home, would it? Think how it would be if it s the place you were born and the only home you knew. (Show laminated picture of refugee camps.) Nepal is known for eight of the ten tallest mountains in the world, including Mount Everest and the Arun Valley, the deepest valley in the world. Even though the tallest mountain in the world was not far away and there are many other beautiful things in Nepal, the Nepali refugees were rarely able to travel outside of their camp. In 2008, a new journey began for many of these families when the United States offered to be home for many of these people. Twenty-five thousand of these refugees now live in Columbus. Can you imagine how happy they are to finally have a place they can call home again? LEARNING ACTIVITY #1 LG GROUP 5-7 MIN TRANSITION 2 MIN LEARNING ACTIVITY #2 SM GROUPS 10 MIN Do you know why we need our passport? It s almost time for our missionary presentation but there is something different about our presenter today. He is am ambassador for Christ just like a missionary, but lives right here in Columbus. How is this possible? (Allow students to respond.) What is an ambassador? He shares the love of Christ, just like a missionary, to a group of people who are from another country. They may be living in Columbus to go to school or because they been forced out of their country and now live in Columbus. OBJECT LESSON #1 Sponsorship Program Have you checked out the bulletin board by the Oasis storage room? Do you remember our goal? We have a ways to go to get there! Let s remember to keep praying for and giving money to reach the goal of paying for another year of schooling for our sponsored kids. This is a wonderful way that each of you can play a small part in being an ambassador, just like a missionary. There will be no music. So let s go watch and listen closely to what <<presenter s name>> has to say about his work among the Bhutanese here in Columbus, a group of people who have been forced out of their home country. MISSIONARY PRESENTATION SMALL GROUP Discussion Wow, wasn t that great to hear from <<presenter s name>>? Isn t it cool to hear what God is doing through his life and how much he loves what he does? What did you think? (Mention a couple things that struck you about his testimony.) Our key verse says, Give thanks to the Lord and proclaim His greatness. Let the world 3
know what He has done (Psalm 105:1). Do you believe you can be an ambassador for God right here in Columbus? How? God has been showing <<presenter s name>> some special ways he can share Christ s love with the Bhutanese refugees here in Columbus. God wants to do the same for us, too. He created us for a special purpose and knows exactly how much we can do with our lives, if we are depending on Him. He may ask us to do hard things, things that we can t do without His help. God wants to help us; if we depend on Him for the hard things now, as we grow older we will be able to do things with His help that we can t even imagine. Let s talk about the picture you colored. I want you to ask God to show you to whom you should give this. It may be someone with whom you don t get along very well, someone you don t know very well or maybe some little girl or boy from another country. Then ask God to give you the strength to do it. Valentine s Day is next week that would be a perfect day to do this. What do you think? (Encourage them.) LEARNING ACTIVITY #3 LG GROUP 10 MIN Prayer Give each small group a prayer ball. Remind the children to squeeze the prayer ball as they pray. As they are praying and changing the shape of the prayer ball, God is changing the shape of the real world through their prayers. Let s pray for a few minutes. Thank God for His love and how much confidence He has in each of us to do great things with His help. Pray for each child to ask God who He would like them to give their picture to and that they would have the courage to do it. Make sure each child writes the name of their special person on the top of their colored flower. Suggest they also tell their parents why and to whom they are planning to give it. GAME Spoon/Marble Relay Bhutanese Instructions: Mark off starting and ending lines with Velcro. Divide the class into 2 teams. At the ending line, place 2 bowls, one for each team. Have children line up behind the starting line. Each player receives a plastic spoon. The first player in each line is given a marble. They are to hold the plastic spoon in their mouth, put the marble on it, walk to the finish line and drop the marble into the basket. If the marble falls off the spoon or does not hit the basket, the player must try again. The first team to have all their marbles in their basket wins. *Remember to send home a giving flyer (if available) and Mission Possible with each student. 4
