Call to Order - Mr. Hughes called the meeting to order. A moment of silence was observed followed by the pledge led by Mr. Wells. 2. Approval of the Agenda - Mr. Greene made a motion to approve the agenda, with a second by Mr. Wells. The motion passed with all in favor. By approving the agenda, the consent agenda items listed below were also approved. 3. Consent Agenda 3.a. Meeting Minutes from September 12 and September 29 3.b. Field Trip Requests 4. Public Comment - Michelle Edmisten, parent of a 7 th grader at Bluff City Middle, addressed the Board regarding the 7 th grade Social Studies book. Ms. Edmisten feels the textbook promotes Islam. She asked that the textbook be removed. 5. Communications to the Board 5.a. Director's Update 5.a.1. MYON Summer Reading Challenge Winners - Through an online library called MYON, between May 10, 2016 and August 15, 2016, Sullivan County students: Finished 8,374 books and Read 1,821 hours and 19 minutes The Top School in the District was ISES. At each school, we honored the grade level of students who had the most students reading MYON books. Also at each school, we honored the student
who showed the most growth as a reader. Each student will receive a Kindle (so that they can read more books) and a gift card to purchase books for their Kindle. 7.b. PreK Additional Funds Resolution Motion Passed: approval of the PreK Additional Funds Resolution passed with a motion by Mr. Randall Jones and a second by. To the Honorable Richard S. Venable, Sullivan County Mayor and the Board of Sullivan County Commissioners meeting in Regular Session this 17 th day of October, 2016. RESOLUTION to Accept and Appropriate Additional Allocations of the Voluntary Pre- K Grant. WHEREAS, the Sullivan County Department of Education has applied for and received Additional Funding from the Voluntary Pre-K Grant specifically to fund the Pre-K program; and WHEREAS, the 2016-2017 additional grant amount is $90,054 with no matching funds required. NOW THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED that the Board of County Commissioners of Sullivan County, Tennessee, assembled in Regular Session hereby authorizes the Sullivan County Department of Education to receive, appropriate, and expend said additional grant funds; not to exceed the above amount ($90,054), as required by the Voluntary Pre- K Contract. All resolutions in conflict herewith be and the same rescinded insofar as such conflict exists.
Mr. Ireson made a motion to remove the Pearson textbook immediately because it does not represent the values of the county. Mrs. Rafalowski said there is Policy 4.403 in place that needs to be followed. This will be addressed at a future board meeting. 8. Adjournment - The meeting adjourned at 7:10 p.m.
