Following the presentation, Board Member Rodney Morris questioned the difference in the facility ranking energy dollars per square foot between the Williams and Riddle elementary schools. Mr. Brown explained the difference is due to both buildings being supplied by two different utility companies. Board Member Bill Standerfer also questioned how is the figure kept down for the energy dollars per square foot for the Armstrong Program at Hawthorne. presented to the Board of Education regarding a partnership with Lake Land College on a Career Academy. PRESENTATION AND BOARD ACTION TO APPROVE THE LAKE LAND COLLEGE CAREER ACADEMY FOR THE 2015-16 SCHOOL YEAR MICHELE SINCLAIR, MHS PRINCIPAL AND TIM CONDRON, CURRICULUM DIRECTOR: Mattoon High School Principal Michele Sinclair and Curriculum Director Tim Condron provided information to the Board of Education regarding a partnership with Lake Land College on a Career Academy allowing students dual enrollment opportunities in manufacturing, automotive, and construction skills. Students will be enrolled in Lake Land College and the high school (hence dual enrolled) for classes. Presently, about 30 students have expressed an interest. Many employees are in need of skills above high school but below a Baccalaureate Degree. All credits earned can be applied toward an Associate s Degree. Board Member Susan Smith asked, What does certified mean? It was explained that being certified shows the program was completed and builds up to an Associate s Degree. Coles Together President Angela Griffin and Lake Land President Josh Bullock took the floor to explain that Mattoon needs to broaden their manufacturing base, and a program such as this will help keep our employers here as well as local people to fill these positions in the manufacturing, automotive, and construction industries. Ms. Griffin also noted Coles Together has offered to help fund the tuition fees for high schools students interested in this program. She felt there may even be a possibility that companies involved may help with funding tuition costs. Mattoon High School Principal Michele Sinclair thought this program more easily fit the needs of those who may not be 4-year college bound students, but are looking more for vocational skills training. Board Member Rodney Morris asked if it was possible for juniors to do this as well. Curriculum Director Tim Condron responded seniors will attend for a one-year certificate as a test run. If the program is a success, it could be a possibility for juniors. Board Member Bob Miller congratulated all involved with putting together this program as he felt it is badly needed. Mr. Miller had gone through similar training and became one of two making the highest paid salary where he was employed. See Exhibit 7.2a Minutes March 10, 2015 Page 5 of 6
