SECOND TIME PIMP SENTENCED TO LENGTHY PRISON SENTENCE County Attorney Pete Orput today announced that Shaun Michael Maubach, 32, of Mahtomedi entered a guilty plea to Sex Trafficking of an individual. He was sentenced immediately to 180 months in prison. Since Maubach had a previous Sex Trafficking conviction he was also sentenced to an additional 48 months in prison for a total of 228 months. Assistant County Attorney Imran Ali prosecuted the case. According to the criminal complaint filed in the case, Maubach was arrested on a Kansas burglary warrant. Police searched his phone and found pictures indicative of the promotion of prostitution and commercial sex trafficking. This included evidence of the posting of numerous commercial sex ads which connected to a particular female. Text messages on the phone showed that Maubach admitted being a pimp and that he said he was running 6 girls. After posting bail on the Kansas charge, police found that Maubach was again posting ads for commercial sex with a phone number listing to a particular female. Police then texted this female and set up a meeting with her, purportedly for sex. Surveillance was set up at the site and police observed Maubach driving a female to the meet location. The female was interviewed and stated that Maubach drove her there for the purpose of sex for money. Maubach had a prior human trafficking related conviction from 2009. This investigation was the culmination of superior collaboration between the Washington County Attorney s office, the Oakdale Police Department and the Woodbury Police Department. Orput stated, Human sex trafficking knows no city boundaries. This investigation shows what inter-agency collaboration can do to further the fight against sex and human trafficking. The use and abuse of these trafficking victims is sickening and antithetical to any rational human being. ####

STATEMENT OF PROBABLE CAUSE The Complainant states that the following facts establish probable cause: Your Complainant is a licensed peace officer in the State of Minnesota and is employed by the Oakdale Police Department. In that capacity, your Complainant states the following to establish probable cause: On 06-20-2017, Woodbury Police Detective Paul Kroshus assisted in an apprehension of suspect identified as Shaun Michael Maubach (DOB: 04-01-1985), the defendant herein, for an active felony warrant from Washington and Kansas State for burglary. Law enforcement located the defendant staying at the LaQuinta Inn in the City of Woodbury. The defendant was arrested. The defendant was in the possession of a substance that later tested positive for methamphetamine. Surveillance was also able to identify a female with the defendant who later has been identified as T.S. (08-02-1990). During his arrest, the defendant stated that he had information regarding the location of $10,000 of methamphetamine and marijuana grow. The defendant stated that he could prove this information with pictures in his cell phone. A detective assigned to the Washington County Drug Task Force met with the defendant. The detective examined the phone and discovered pictures of large amounts of methamphetamine and the marijuana grow. While looking through the cell phone pictures, the detective observed pictures indicative of prostitution and other related activities. Detective Kroshus applied for and was granted a search warrant for the cell phone belonging to the defendant. During the review of the cell phone content, Detective Kroshus discovered that the defendant had a "textnow" phone application on his device. This phone application allows users to generate additional phone numbers which can be used as a secondary phone line. Detective Kroshus observed conversations consistent with commercial sex. The phone number generated from the phone application was XXX-XXX- 8219. Using a law enforcement database, Detective Kroshus found that this phone number was connected to over fifteen commercial sex advertisements posted in the Twin Cites metro area starting on 06-17-2017. The database also allows searching for commercial sex advertisements by image. Detective Kroshus found additional phone numbers connected to the sex trafficking of the same female in the states of Washington, Colorado and Minnesota. To date, Detective Kroshus has discovered over one-hundred commercial sex advertisements connected to the same female. After reviewing the Facebook.com account belonging to T.S., Detective Kroshus found that some of the pictures on the commercial sex advertisements matched those on the Facebook.com profile belonging to T.S. The day before the arrest of the defendant, T.S. was posted on Backpage.com in the City of Woodbury. Detective Kroshus also observed text messages in the cell phone belonging to the defendant admitting he was a "Pimp" and that he was "running 6 girls." In one particular communication, an individual accused the defendant of recording a prostitution sex act. The defendant stated "I've got pussy for sale bro how could I be on some funny shit that bitch and 6 others sell their ass for me." Detective Kroshus then located what appear to be secret video recordings of suspected commercial sex customers having sex with known sex trafficking victims. Detective Kroshus also observed conversations about robbing potential commercial sex customers and phonograph of the defendant wearing a black ski mask, gloved and holding a black handgun. Several text messages and pictures also show his involvement in the distribution of methamphetamine. Based on the trafficking and narcotic content, Detective Kroshus continued his investigation. On 06-20- 2017, the defendant was charged in Washington County with "fugitive from justice." The defendant posted the bond and was released from jail. Upon the defendant release from jail, Detective Kroshus observed a 2

commercial sex advertisement with pictures similar to T.S. on Backpage.com with the phone number XXX- XXX-7544 listed. These images and this phone number were known to law enforcement from the administrative subpoena returns from the defendant's Backpage.com account. The commercial sex advertisement listed the location as "Oakdale." On 06-28-2017, Detective Kroshus began undercover text communications with the phone number. Detective Kroshus communicated with the number agreeing to pay $250 in exchange for one hour. Detective Kroshus asked if there were any "rules." The individual texting responded "no bb." This is a common term used in the commercial sex industry for sex without a condom (bare back). Detective Kroshus provided the address of 5670 Hadley Avenue North in the City of Oakdale, Washington County, as the meet location. The surveillance team observed a pickup truck with a male and female occupant. The female, later identified as T.S., exited the vehicle and the male occupant drove away. Immediately, Detective Kroshus received a text message from T.S. stating she had arrived. Due to traffic at the nearby business, surveillance lost sight of the vehicle with the male occupant. Oakdale Police Detective Ryan Stuart and Detective Kroshus made contact with T.S. T.S. was interviewed and admitted that she arrived at the meet location to have sex in exchange for money. T.S. stated that "Shaun" had driven her in the pickup truck. T.S. stated that the money she earns for the commercial sex acts goes to paying "their bills." T.S. stated that once her cell phone is "turned on" the defendant is able to see and hear everything. T.S. stated that the defendant uses the tracking phone application to "monitor where she is and what she is doing." Throughout the interview T.S. seemed fearful of the defendant and "relieved" that the police intervened. During the interview of T.S., Detective Kroshus received multiple calls on his UC phone from the same phone number that the date for commercial sex was set up. Woodbury Police Detective Nick Wachal answered one of the phone calls and spoke to the defendant. Detective Wachal stated the defendant demanded to "speak with the girl" and sounded angry. A short time later, surveillance observed the pickup truck return to the area. The defendant was arrested and transported to the Washington County Jail. The defendant denied tracking T.S. but admitted that he is a "drug dealer" who dated "prostitutes". The defendant has a lengthy criminal history including several violent crime convictions. The defendant was convicted of a felony "qualified human trafficking-related offense" in 2009 (02-CR-09-10131). Law enforcement had identified at least one other victim of sex trafficking relating to defendant. The investigation into other victims is ongoing. On 06-29-2017, the defendant, in a recorded jail call, told an individual he identified as his father to have everything "erased" into each accounts before the police obtain a search warrant. The defendant provided multiple email addresses and passwords to the accounts. On a later call, the defendant is told by his father that everything has been destroyed by "Trevor." The defendant stated that if the all accounts, including those belonging to T.S., are not wiped clean "I'm fucked." 3
