RAUN is dedicated to training and equipping the next generation of internationalists with the necessary knowledge to provide solutions to contemporary global challenges. RAUN Regional Academy on the United Nations Empowering and Engaging Youth for A Better World System 1

1. General description The Regional Academy on the United Nations (RAUN) was launched in January 2012 as a program of the Academic Council on the United Nations System Vienna, in cooperation with the United Nations Information Service (UNIS) Vienna, the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test- Ban Treaty Organization (CTBTO), and the Czech United Nations Association. Partner institutions of RAUN include the University of Economics (Prague), the University of Szeged, Law Faculty of the University of Ljubljana, Law Faculty of the University of Belgrade as organizing partners, the Diplomatic Academy of Vienna, University of Vienna, the European Peace University, the Austrian Federal Ministry for European and International Affairs, and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Czech Republic. 2. Aim This international project aims to assist students of international relations, law, economics and related fields in deepening their knowledge of United Nations mission, values, and work. RAUN is dedicated to training and equipping the next generation of internationalists with the necessary tools to provide solutions for the global challenges in the 21st century. 2

3. Structure RAUN is a mobile academy with four sessions per year program that takes place in the Czech Republic, Hungary, Austrian, Slovenia and Serbia. The program offers students from participating countries the possibility to attend lectures covering the wide range of United Nations activities, held by high-ranking experts and practitioners, who share their rich experience. It is organized in form of international lecture sessions for students in participating countries and in addition, students make field trips to the United Nations institutions in Vienna. This unique opportunity enables them to talk to well-known experts and practitioners directly collaborating with the United Nations. Moreover, students are required to work in team and do research on topics relevant to the United Nations througho ut the year. At the end of the program, they present the outcomes of their collaboration before a jury of experts at the UN headquarters in Vienna. 4. Main project themes Over the time of the project, students will research on the following main categories which will be shaped to suit students interest: Nuclearrelated issues (e.g.: nuclear safety and disarmament); International security (e.g.: terrorism, civil war etc.); Human rights (e.g.: refugees and migrations, rights of minorities; human trafficking); International development (e.g.: development in post-conflict societies, MDGs and SDGs); the UN in the 21 st century. The academy s last session will take place in Vienna in January 2014, where the outcome of the research projects will be presented in front of experts at the UN Offices in Vienna as one of the requirements to receive a certificate of a successful completion of the academy. 6. Preliminary program (to be confirmed) The following sessions will take place in four of the following countries: Austria, Hungary, Czech Republic, Serbia, and Slovenia. Session one: May 2013 Prague, Czech Republic o The United Nations in the 21 st Century o Eastern Europe and the United Nations o Development in Post-conflict Societies o Nuclear Safety and Security o Debate/negotiation exercise simulation of a real situation (e.g. UN SC meeting on drafting a resolution on Syria) o Distribution of project research topics Session two: August 2013 Ljubljana, Slovenia o The Responsibility to Protect R2P in theory and practice o Debate/negotiation exercise simulation of a real situation (e.g. UN SC meeting on drafting a resolution on Mali) Session three: October 2013 Szeged, Hungary 4

o Refugees and Migration in Europe o Model United Nations o Project research discussion and process review Session four (final session): January 2014 Vienna, Austria Note: The final session of the RAUN will be part of the ACUNS Annual Conference which is organized in close cooperation with Vienna-based UN entities. o UN policies revisited o New drug policies o Human Rights (e.g. new forms of slavery, death penalty and femicide) o Engaging youth in effective governance o Development in the Global South o New forms of slavery The 2014-2015 programme will start in April 2014 in Belgrade, Serbia o Human trafficking o Legal aid o Minority rights 7. About participants The program is open for Bachelor (final year) and Master students of international relations, law, economics and related fields of partner universities. Applicants to the program will be selected based on their knowledge and interest in the United Nations. Six to eight students from each country (Austria, Czech Republic, Hungary, Slovenia and Serbia) will be chosen to participate in the program. After completing the program, students will be awarded a certificate of participation. Those who bring an outstanding contribution will be offered the possibility to publish their research projects. 8. Eligibility Participants should fulfil the following criteria: - Be enrolled in a Bachelor (final year) and Master programme in one of the participating countries - Have interest in the UN system and topics of the RAUN programme 5

- Be willing to work in a multicultural team - Be able to combine the Regional Academy on the United Nations requirements with their studies - BE ABLE TO ATTEND ALL FOUR SESSIONS. Costs of the program: Participants of the program need to cover all their costs of transportation, accommodation and meals, however the sending institutions might provide funding for some of the costs. The organizer of each session will offer budget accommodation and meals for reasonable prices for the participants. 9.
