I hope you all had a restful and relaxing summer. The start of the school year is the start of many new beginnings and new feelings. I have found that being involved in the PTSA keeps me connected to my children s school and has been a rewarding experience for me. I have been a proud Beck parent for six years and I am looking forward to continuing with my youngest child as he enters the 8 th grade. My name is Angie Hill and I am honored, as well as excited to serve as your PTSA President for the 2017-2018 school year. Beck Academy is a special place and I look forward to welcoming both our new and returning families. The dedicated staff, teachers, and volunteers are willing and ready to ensure that your student receives the best education. The PTSA organization is a very important part of our school. The overall purpose of the PTSA is to help every child reach his or her potential. Our goal is to empower and engage with all of the families at Beck. PTSA s benefit everyone, strong schools mean stronger communities. The perfect place to start participating at Beck Academy is by joining the PTSA and by becoming a Beck Backer. 100% of the funds donated to the Beck Backer program remain at our school. Your student will bring home information about both programs and more in the First Day School Packet. Please visit our PTSA section of the Beck Academy website to learn more about our PTSA and how you can be involved. I look forward to another great year! A Message From Our Principal Welcome Beck students and parents! Thank you teachers, staff, parents, and students for an amazing first week of school! Once again, our PTSA officers and volunteers have spent countless hours at the school over the past several weeks helping to ensure a smooth opening. We have one of the strongest Parent Teacher Student Associations in the state with many volunteers who tirelessly donate their time and resources to make Beck the outstanding school that it is. There is a tremendous amount of work that takes place behind the scenes during the summer as we prepare to open the building and greet students. It never ceases to amaze me how many parents and staff members donate their time to serve the students at Beck Academy. Please know that I greatly appreciate your contributions and feel blessed to be part of this wonderful school community. It was wonderful to see so many parents and students at our KNIGHT Shift on August 16th. Every year we have more and more students participate, with over 90% of our students in attendance. As a result, the students were more relaxed as they entered the building on the first day of school. I would like to extend a special thank you to Mrs. Woody, Mrs. Sinkler, Mr. Stewart and all of our 6 th grade and related arts teachers for making the day such a success. As the opening activities draw to a close and the year gets underway, remember that you can help your child be successful by establishing positive routines at home. Even though middle school students often crave independence, this is usually the time they need the most support. Due to the many changes they are going through at this age, things like organization and responsibility are not always at their strongest. My suggestion is to continue providing support and only begin to slowly transition when you are very confident that they can manage the workload on their own. We understand that sometimes middle school parents are not sure how to stay connected with the school. Two very important tools that can help you are the Parent Portal and the Smartphone App. The Parent Portal can be reached easily from our school s website. Schoolinfoapp is a free app you can download on your smart phone. Finally, I hope you will all join us on September 7 th at 5:30pm for our PTSA Open House. We will begin in the cafeteria at 5:30 with a PTSA meeting. Following the meeting, parents will rotate through their child s schedule and hear from all of their teachers. Thank you again for a great beginning and I am looking forward to another successful year. Jennifer Meisten Beck Academy Principal Beck enews, Issue 2, August 28, 2017 Page 2

Cookie Dough Sales Wednesday, September 7th thru Wednesday, September 21st just in time for holiday baking Sweet Treat Days are back! Sweet Treat Days are a one day special sale items offered during lunch. Under State law, we are allowed exemption days, when groups can fundraise by selling snacks that are outside the strict new USDA nutritional guidelines. We had more success with these sales over the past three years than the school store, and the kids REALLY enjoyed having the occasional treats. We ll still need parent volunteers at these monthly events, so please consider helping. Our first SWEET TREAT day will be September 15th! Future dates will be posted in future enews issues. Sweet Treats can only be purchased with CASH. Help support Beck Academy! If you haven t already completed the PTA Membership form that was in your First Day packet, you can get a form from the Front Office. Memberships are $6 per membership. Publix Super Markets has a great program that will enable our school to make money every time we shop at Publix. It s simple: Just present the Publix Partners card (the one that you received in the first day packet) when you shop and Publix will handle everything else. For every eligible $37,500* our supporters spend at Publix, $250 will be given to our school at the quarter s end. If we haven t reached the $37,500 mark by the end of a quarter, our balance will carry over to the next quarter. There are on hundreds of products we use every day. Simply clip the coupon from the package and start collecting. Send the Box Tops in with your student or drop off in the front office next time you are at Beck. Each Box Top is worth 10 cents and when we all work together, the money adds up fast! Beck will have a several contests throughout the year. Stay tuned.
