P A G E 2 Premier Hun Sen Urges New Indonesian Ambassador to Help Boost Trade Cooperation 02, 2014 Cambodian Prime Minister Samdech Akka Moha Sena Padei Techo Hun Sen has called on newly-appointed Indonesian Ambassador to Cambodia H.E. Pitono Purnomo to help boost the cooperation on trade, tourism and investment between the two countries. In a meeting here this morning at the Peace Palace, Samdech Techo Hun Sen said the investment and trade volume between Cambodia and Indonesia is not high enough, both countries still have more potentialities, especially in the fields of trade, tourism and investment. Samdech Techo Hun Sen thus requested H.E. Pitono Purnomo to further boost these sectors and to push for Cambodia-Indonesia direct flights. In addition, Samdech Techo Prime Minister asked the Indonesian side to continue providing scholarships to Cambodian students in contribution to human resource development in Cambodia. For his part, the new Indonesian diplomat highly appreciated Cambodia s annual economic growth of around 7 percent and congratulated the country on its success in organizing the Angkor Sankranta 2014. Cambodia, Russia To Sign MoU on Bilateral Consultations 05, 2014 He also expressed his commitment to increase the trade exchange between the two ASEAN countries, to encourage more Indonesian investors to Cambodia, and to promote the bilateral tourism cooperation. P A G E 3 Cambodia and Russia will sign a memorandum of understanding (MoU) on bilateral consultations between the two foreign ministries during Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation H.E. Hor Namhong s visit to Russia soon. H.E. Koy Kuong, Spokesperson for the Cambodian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, told this to reporters after the meeting here this morning between H.E. Hor Namhong and newly-appointed Ambassador of the Russian Federation to Cambodia H.E. Dmitry Tsvetkov. The MoU will further deepen the relations between the two countries, the spokesperson underlined. During the meeting, H.E. Hor Namhong and H.E. Dmitry Tsvetkov discussed the debts Cambodia owed to the former Soviet Union in 1980s, said the spokesperson, adding that both sides agreed to solve the issue in the spirit of friendship for the interest of the two countries. Cambodia and Russia will also organize this year in Russia the 8th inter-governmental meeting on technical and cultural cooperation, he said. According to the new Russian diplomat, a group of Russian business executives would pay a visit in Cambodia in late 2014 to explore investment opportunities in the Kingdom. Article in English by Khan Sophirom Cambodia Receives Over US$1 Million for Explosive Remnant Clearance 05, 2014 The U.S Department of State donated more than US$1 million for the clearance of the existing explosive remnants of war in the eastern part of Cambodia. Cambodian Mine Action Center (CMAC) and Norwegian People s Aid (NPA) as implementers of the funded project formalized their partnership through the signing of the Memorandum of Understanding late last week at CMAC training school in Kampong Chhnang province. The assistance proves a great fulfillment of moral duty by the U.S because most of the explosives were used by the U.S during a war against Vietnam, said Secretary General of the Cambodian Mine Action and Victim Assistance Authority H.E. Chum Bunrong. According to the statistics by the U.S. Department of State, some 2.7 million tons of explosives were bombarded on Cambodian territory during the war, of which there were 19.5 million cluster bombs the primary focus of the aid. Starting from May 1, 2014 to Sept. 30, 2015, the project with the exact amount of US$1,761,394 began with creating a safe living environment for the locals in Kampong Cham and Kratie target areas. Since 1993, Cambodia has received supports of around US$60 million from the U.S. for the clearance of the explosive remnants of war along the Cambodia- Vietnam border. By Mom Chan Dara Soleil

P A G E 4 Singaporean Investors Seek Investment Opportunity in Cambodia 12, 2014 A Singaporean company is seeking the investment opportunity in Cambodia, said an official of Phnom Penh Municipality. While meeting with Phnom Penh Municipal Governor H.E. Pa Socheatevong on Friday last week, visiting Mr. Fabian Ong, Chairman of the Board of Directors of Linen & Fabian Consultant Holdings Co., Ltd. said that his company has had many experience in overseas investment such as in China, Vietnam, and Thailand, and now it is willing to invest in Cambodia, added the official. H.E. Pa Socheatevong said that Phnom Penh Municipality welcomed the company s investment intention, and was ready to assist the Singaporean company to do business in Cambodia, particularly in Phnom Penh Capital. The governor further informed his guest that Phnom Penh city has remarkably developed with a total population of over 2 millions, and more than 500 factories and enterprises, stressing that local authorities have been expanding their administrative tasks to ensure the living and stability of investors in Cambodia. P A G E 5 Cambodia s Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation H.E. Long Visalo (R) and Mongolia s Deputy Foreign Minister H.E. Damba Gankhuyag sign on May 2 in Phnom Penh a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on Establishment of Bilateral Consultations between the two foreign ministries. Cambodia s Economic Growth Can Sustain 12, 2014 Dynamic economic growth of Cambodia will continue, but the Kingdom should keep up with successful implementation of its policies, projected Dr. Benny Widyono, former UN Secretary General s Representative in Cambodia. The policies include the reduction of remaining poverty, in particular through the transformation of Cambodia s workforce from agriculture to production, construction and services, added Dr. Benny Widyono in his address to hundreds of students at Paññāsāstra University of Cambodia late last week. Co-organized by the Paññāsāstra University of Cambodia and Center for Khmer Studies, the presentation focused primarily on the economic impacts and challenges of globalization in Cambodia. Cambodia has maintained at least 7 percent its annual economic growth in the recent years and is getting itself ready for the upcoming 2015 ASEAN Economic Community of approximately 600 million populations. The globalization makes people get closer together through goods and services exchange, investment, financial flow and migration. It s very important, added the former UN Secretary General s Representative in Cambodia, that Cambodia needs to improve skills for its people through comprehensive training and quality university education. P A G E 6 Cambodia To Send Workers to Saudi Arabia 12, 2014 Cambodia and Saudi Arabia have been working toward the signing of a memorandum of understanding (MoU) on sending Cambodian workers to work as housemaids in Saudi Arabia, according to local media reports. Both countries have been speeding up the process of sending Cambodian laborers to work as housemaids in Saudi Arabia as fast as possible, underlined the reports, adding that Cambodian Minister of Labor and Vocational Training H.E. Ith Samheng has met recently with Ambassador of Saudi Arabia to Cambodia H.E. Salah Ahmed Hamed Sarhan to discuss the issue. The Hanoi-based diplomat underlined that Saudi Arabia welcomed the Cambodian workers and wished to reach an agreement on the recruitment of Cambodian workers soon. In reply, H.E. Ith Samheng welcomed the cooperation and pledged to push for the signing of the MoU between the two countries as soon as possible. He also hoped that there will be other job opportunities besides housemaids, especially in industrial sector. By Chea Vannak Cambodia Receives an Award for Anti-TB Effort 05, 2014 Cambodia s Ministry of Health has recently received an award for its anti-tuberculosis (TB) efforts from the United States Agency for International Development (USAID). According to Director of National Center for Tuberculosis and Leprosy Control (CENAT) H.E. Mao Tan Eang, thanks to the ministry s tireless efforts and support from different donors over the past ten years, Cambodia has succeeded in achieving the Millennium Development Goal on reducing the TB morbidity and mortality rate. It is a successful case in the world even though Cambodia is a low income country. I think other countries should learn from Cambodia s success, said Ms. Rebecca Black, USAID Mission Director for Cambodia. Health Minister H.E. Mam Bunheng said this award is not only the symbol of our anti-tb efforts, but also an encouragement to our health officials to continue their commitment in fighting against TB. The TB mortality rate dropped from 157 to 63 cases per 100,000 people, while its prevalence rate decreased from 1,670 cases in 1990 to only 764 cases in 2012 among 100,000 people.
