John Adams (1797-1801) President when a two party system forms. He had a cautious but forceful foreign policy.
A short stack with a short fuse. Adams believed he couldn t lose. His VP Jefferson wasn t in the Federalist party though Constitution needed amending again! Say it aint so! Adams was a strong Federalist, wanting BIG national government Jefferson couldn t believe the money being spent Adams troubles began with the XYZ affair the French politicians demanded money to share They would not talk or have diplomacy unless they were paid a 10 million dollar fee. Federalist Hamilton wanted full out war Federalist Adams wanted peace at his core. In the end all he did was intimidate By building frigates to avoid a bloody fate. things got worse with the Alien and Sedition acts in the very end. They made it harder to become American. They were shot down by states rights to NULLIFY a law not liked inspired by Jefferson to take up this fight. This is why John Adams though strong and firm only was president for one term
