Synthetic Identity Fraud Synthetic identity fraud Combines stolen real identifying information with fake information Typically involves using a real DL or SSN number, and combining that with a different name, age, gender, and/or address Identity is fabricated rather than stolen Advances in technology making it harder to identify manipulated or synthetic identity credentials Federal Trade Commission estimates that synthetic identity fraud now accounts for 85% of all identity fraud (compared to truename ) Once a fraudulent, manipulated, or synthetic identity is approved and in the system, that identity is considered good 3
