EUROPASS CV SPANISH SURVEY 2017

Introduction From September to December 2017, the Spanish National Europass Center conducted an online survey among Europass users and visitors of the Europass website in order to have a better knowledge of the profile, opinion and needs of Spanish users of the Europass Curriculum Vitae. The data was collected through the completion of a questionnaire consisting of 15 questions (see Annex I) hosted on the SEPIE website and, more specifically, on the Europass page: http://sepie.es/iniciativas/europass /index.html. The survey was also disseminated through newsletters, email and on the social networks. During the time the survey was open, 668 people answered it. The results of the survey are shown below. 1. GENERAL KNOWLEDGE OF THE EUROPASS DOCUMENTS Do you know the Europass portfolio? YES NO 0 100 200 300 400 500 600 Out of the 668 users who completed the survey, 494 claimed to have prior knowledge of the Europass portfolio of documents (without specifying whether they had used them or not) while for the remaining 174 this was their first approach to it. This means that 26% of the people who answered the survey did not have prior knowledge of the documents which, to some extent, can be read as a positive sign since it seems to indicate they were curious about Europass and willing to take their time to complete the survey even when they were not very familiar with the topic. However, in order to make the analysis of data as reliable as possible, only the responses of users who had actually used the CV previously were taken into account for the assessment of opinions on this document.

If so, what documents of the portfolio do you know? DS/CS EMD CV, ELP, DS/CS CV, ELP, EMD CV, EMD, DS/CS CV 0 50 100 150 200 250 According to the survey, Spanish users are most familiar with the curriculum vitae: 484 people claim to know this document (almost 98% of those who claim to have prior knowledge of the existence of Europass). In addition, almost half of those 484 people (45%) state that they do not know any other document in the Europass portfolio. From this data, we can conclude that there is a need to work on the dissemination of the rest of documents which conform the portfolio, beyond the CV itself. If you answered yes, which documents have you used? ES PEL EMD CV have used them know them 0 100 200 300 400 500 600 A total of 448 people (92.56%) out of the 484 that claim to know the Europass CV say they have used it before and 410 (84%) consider that the CV is the most useful or is among the most useful documents of the dossier. The Europass CV seems to have wide acceptance among Spanish respondents and a very high percentage of users claim they prefer Europass to other existing CV formats.

2. GENERAL ASSESSMENT OF THE EUROPASS CV BY SPANISH USERS In order to increase the reliability of data analysis of the survey, only the responses of those users who know and have used the Europass CV before (448 responses) have been taken into consideration in this section. Have you filled out any other type of CV before using Europass? NO YES 0 50 100 150 200 250 300 350 400 450 Out of 448 people surveyed who claim to have used the Europass CV previously, 384 (85.70%) had used some other CV format previously, while for the remaining 14.30% Europass is the only template known and used. Therefore, the Europass CV seems to be an option not only among students and people who make their CV for the first time, but it also shows that a large percentage of people who have already used other models prefer the Europass template or decide to try the document. In this sense, the results obtained for Spain are in line with those obtained in the European survey conducted by CEDEFOP in 2016. Did you use the online editor to create your CV? 348 people (77.60%) have used the editor, while almost 25% of Spanish Europass CV users still do not use the online tool and prefer to work on the downloaded template. The reasons why this is so cannot, unfortunately, be inferred from the answers to the survey. If you used the online editor, how difficult did you find it? No answer Easy / Very easy Average difficulty Difficult / Very difficult 0 20 40 60 80 100 120 140 160 180 200

It is worth mentioning that most users of the online editor are of the opinion that it has a medium to low degree of difficulty (318 people, 91.38%), while only 4% (14 people) believe that the tool is difficult or very difficult to use, and a user of the editor does not answer this question. Why did you decide to use the Europass CV? Others It was a requirement We practiced it at school Someone told me about it It is a popular format among institutions It is an internationally acknowledged format The graphics are good and attractive It provides many examples It is simple and esay to use 0 50 100 150 200 250 Regarding the reasons why the Spanish users prefer the Europass CV to other templates or formats, the main reason expressed is its international acknowledgement, followed by the obligation to submit that format. This indicates that Spanish users have the perception that this format is widely recognized in an international context and, consequently, its use is very often linked to mobility objectives. On the other hand, the fact that 36.50% of the users answered that they had used it because it was a requirement indicates that the use of the Europass CV is widespread among institutions and companies which recommend or positively evaluate the use of this format. The fact that also an important percentage of people (42%) answered that they had practiced it in class shows that the dissemination in the educational field is working favorably and that its use among Spanish professors, teaching staff and students is widely consolidated. The ease of use is also wielded as a main reason by a third of users although it does not seem to be among the main reasons for its use.

In which countries have you used/ do you intend to use the CV? Spain Germany Portugal Belgium Poland France Others Italy UK Malta Ireland Greece Cyprus Despite the fact that one of the main reasons given is its international recognition, the majority of users (83.50%) state that they have used the CV or intend to use it in Spain, although not necessarily only in this country. The United Kingdom in second place and France, Ireland and Germany with similar quotas in third place are the main destinations of Spanish users of the Europass CV. What was/is the aim of your CV? Aplying for an apprenticeship 4% 15% 21% Applying for an educational post 7% 13% 14% 19% 7% Applying for a job in Spain Applying for a job abroad Applying for a grant Work promotion Applying for a volunteer position Others The highest percentages correspond to the application for apprenticeship/trainship positions (21%) and job search in Spain (19%), followed by the search for employment in other countries (14%) and scholarships or grants applications (13%). These results, although aligned with those obtained by the European survey of 2016, show a wider range of reasons in the Spanish case and a lower percentage of use for employment purposes (possibly also influenced by high rates of unemployment in this country). Although it is not clearly stated in the answers, we are quite positive that the percentages of use when applying for internships/apprenticeships and for scholarships are largely associated with the completion of transnational mobility experiences in the context of the Erasmus+ program.

Have you ever found a job applying with your Europass CV? Although the numbers are not too big (due to the fact that a large percentage of the users apply for scholarships or internships), 118 people (26%) claim to have found employment using the Europass CV. Out of these, 73% have found employment in Spanish companies, 2.50% in European companies and the rest (25.50%) in non-european companies. From this, it can be inferred that the Europass CV is a format also recognized outside the borders of the EU. 3. USER S PROFILE Regarding the profile of the users who answered the survey, 378 were women and 290 were men, indicating a greater number of female users. below 20 years 21-25 26-30 31-35 over 35 By age, unlike the European sample of the 2016 survey, almost 38% are over 35 years old and 24% are under 25 years old, something probably related to the fact that these age groups are the most affected for unemployment in Spain. Only 19% are between 21 and 30 years of age, this group possibly being people who, being currently employed or studying make a lesser use of the CV at the current time. 2% 6% 1% 44% Student Unskilled worker 44% Skilled worker Looking for first job Jobseeker 3% Freelancer

By occupation profiles, the highest percentage of Europass CV users in Spain is formed by students or qualified workers: 88% of the Spanish users of the Europass CV fall within one of these two categories. This fact should lead us to consider that an effort should be made in order to achieve a more extensive dissemination of the Europass documents in other sectors, beyond the academic world and the qualified workers group. Summary of Results The survey has provided very valuable results in terms of the perception and use of the Europass CV by national users. In general, the data is highly positive and they corroborate that: Users are highly satisfied with the Europass CV. The format is widely acknowledged in the educational field. There is growing acceptance of this format by companies and institutions. We must continue working, however, in achieving greater recognition by Spanish enterprises. The Europass National Center should also guide its dissemination strategy to embrace other sectors. The data obtained in this survey will be taken into account by the National Europass Center in the next Dissemination and Communication Strategy.
