MINUTES CITY OF PASADENA SENIOR COMMISSION Tuesday, April 11, 2017 2:00 PM Jackie Robinson Community Center, Room 200 1020 North Fair Oaks Ave. Pasadena, CA 91103 COMMISSIONERS PRESENT: Norma Aceituno, Robin Allen, Peggy Buchanan, Akila Gibbs, Priscilla Hernandez, Mireya Asturias Jones, Charles Nelson, Jean Owen, Laura Romero, Frank Soto, Patricia Wright COMMISSIONERS ABSENT: Angie Mont O Brien (excused), Patricia Wright (excused) GUESTS PRESENT: None STAFF PRESENT: Pamela Cantero, Charlene Porter 1. CALL TO ORDER/WELCOME/ROLL CALL Chair Priscilla Hernandez called the meeting to order at 2:11pm. Charlene Porter called the roll. A quorum was established for the Commission. 2. PUBLIC COMMENT ON MATTERS NOT ON THE AGENDA. No public comment 3. REVIEW AND APPROVAL OF MINUTES, March 14, 2017. After review, it was moved (Buchanan) and seconded (Romero) to approve the Minutes of March 14, 2017 (motion unanimously carried). Amendment of March 14, 2017 minutes by Priscilla. Commissioners Nelson and Sata to the Senior Housing Committee Commissioners Aceituno, Nelson and Sata to the Senior Mobility Committee Commissioner Jones to the Senior Outreach/Education Committee 4. NEW BUSINESS INFORMATION ITEM Presentations: AARP was unable to attend the meeting. Pamela will reach out to for representation at the next meeting scheduled for May 9 th, 2017 meeting. 5. REPORTS AND COMMENTS FROM COMMISSIONERS, AD HOC COMMITTEES AND STAFF (Recurring Agenda Items) INFORMATION ITEMS ONLY A. Report from the Chair

Chair Hernandez reported on the training she attended regarding the roles of the Commission Chair and Vice Chair. This training is the first of its kind sponsored by the City of Pasadena. B. Ad Hoc Committee/Task Force Reports Senior Dementia Awareness (Gibbs, Romero, Tachiki). Commissioner Tachiki gave a brief overview of items related to Dementia Awareness. Discussion followed. Senior Housing (Hubbard, Wright). No updates Senior Mobility (Hubbard, Wright). No updates. Senior Outreach/Education (Allen, Hernandez, O Brien, Owen) o Commissioner Allen recommended that staff start and archive of all meeting handouts to have for historical purposes. o Commissioner Hernandez reported on creating a Facebook page for the Commission as a way of reaching out to the public through social media. Brief discussion followed. 5. Commissioner Updates/Comments Commissioner Gibbs gave an update on the status of registration for the 16 th Annual Conference on the Aging to be held on April 22, 2017. Approximately 1,000 individuals have registered. 6. Staff Updates Pamela Cantero introduced herself as the new staff person assigned to the. Horace Wormely, Department Director will attend the next meeting scheduled for May 9 th, 2017 to give an update on the Commission staff reassignments. Suggested agenda items for future commission meetings o AARP Representative Rafi Nazarian to discuss the Aging Friendly Community. o Department of Consumer Affairs to discuss senior scams and safeguarding. 7. Adjournment It was moved (Jones) and seconded (Hubbard) to adjourn the meeting. (Motion unanimously carried) The meeting was adjourned at 2:50pm
