AP Government and Politics Summer Assignment 2016-2017 CCLA-ArTES Magnet High School Mrs. Ghoneim-Sobel Students have a three-part summer assignment. 1. Buy The Complete Idiot s Guide to U.S. Government and Politics by Franco Scardino. Please buy this book; it is available at local bookstores and online (try amazon.com). If you cannot purchase the book, please take notes and annotations in a notebook instead. You are required to read the entire book before coming to school in the Fall. I will be checking for annotations the first week of school. Annotations are meaningful notes in margins as well as important portions highlighted for reference. It is essential for success this coming year to come into this class with a basic understanding of our system and its underpinnings. 2. Read the U.S. Constitution. See the worksheet on the following pages. Write the answers directly on the document. Be prepared to be tested on the cases and the Constitution the first week of school. 3. Buy or rent AP Government and Politics Crash Course. This book is one of the best review books. Use this book to review during the semester and before the exam in May. 4. Court Cases. This is optional. We will be completing this assingment during the semester, but if you want to get a head start, it is highly recommended you complete this assignment prior to the start of the school year. Research the 25 court cases listed at the end of the Constitution worksheet. Create a journal in which the following information is recorded: 1) The Constitutional Question brought up by the case. 2) Background information. What is the case about? 3) Opinion of the court and long-term results. What impact did the precedent have? The journal should be typed and is due the first week of the semester. Students will be tested on the journal the first week of class and should be prepared to see these cases repeated throughout the semester. Information can be found on several reliable websites. My favorite is oyez.org. Do not rely exclusively on Wikipedia!

The court of original jurisdiction is the first court that hears a case. Appellate courts hear cases on appeal from lower courts. Although the Supreme Court functions primarily as an appellate court, it is the courts of original jurisdiction in certain kinds of cases. What are those? 12. What does this imply? PART III. MAJORITY AND SUPERMAJORITY The Constitution requires a simple majority for some actions and a supermajority for others. A simple majority means more than half, while supermajority requirements can involve a 2/3 majority or a 3/4 majority. Most elections in the United States require a plurality, or the most votes, but not necessarily a majority.

THE AMENDMENTS TO THE CONSTITUTION Some parts of the Constitution require a simple majority, others a supermajority, while still others protect citizens from the will of the majority. The first ten amendments to the Constitution, the Bill of Rights protect citizens from the will of the majority. In other words, no majority could vote to take these rights away. Read each amendment to the Constitution and answer the questions below.
