Organizational Sign-on Letter: Reject Mike Pompeo for Secretary of State Dear U.S. Senators, We are writing to urge you to reject the nomination of Mike Pompeo for Secretary of State. Mike Pompeo is a climate denier who, during his time in Congress, was the top recipient of money from the Koch Brothers and commonly regarded as the Koch Brothers Congressman. The Koch Brothers have poured hundreds of millions of dollars into highly improper and unethical climate denial efforts over the past twenty years, including funding junk science and fake propaganda campaigns -- and paying off elected officials like Mike Pompeo. At a time when our planet is rapidly warming and millions are being impacted by climate change supercharged hurricanes, fires, drought, mudslides, and more, the last thing we need is another climate denier in the White House administration; his nomination must be rejected. Any Senator who votes in support of his nomination to the important position of Secretary of State is complicit in advancing the Trump/Pompeo pro-fossil fuel, anti-climate agenda. During his time in Congress, Mike Pompeo made numerous statements evidencing his climate denial and took other actions that reflect an extreme anti-environmental, anti-consumer safety agenda. Among these were: Repeatedly questioning the settled science of climate change, opposing the Paris climate accord, and calling Obama-era plans to address climate change damaging and radical, even though they clearly did not go nearly far enough to address the impending climate crisis. Authoring and introducing the Natural Gas Pipeline Permitting Reform Act, which would expedite the approval of pipelines used to move fracked gas. This would facilitate more fracking and use of gas, which is a leading contributor to climate change. Calling for the permanent elimination of wind power production tax credits, at a time when we need to be giving every incentive for more solar and wind production as we move off fossil fuels. Carrying Monsanto s water as well, by authoring federal legislation that stripped states of their rights to inform consumers about whether food contained genetically modified ingredients. Food & Water Watch Washington, DC 1

The Secretary of State is responsible for representing the United States abroad and negotiating our position on international issues. Climate change is the most pressing issue of our time; indeed, many of our past and remaining responsible national security experts consider climate change to be a major threat to this country s national security and safety. We cannot afford to have a pro-fossil fuel climate denier in that position. All senators who accept the settled science and care for future generations around must reject his nomination. Thank you for your consideration.
