City of Holland International Relations Commission Meeting May 3, 2018 2 nd Floor Training Room at 5:30 p.m. Meeting Minutes Subject to Change: I. Call to Order. Meeting called to order by Chair Weststrate at 5:43 p.m. II. Public Comment. None. III. Attendance: Commissioners English, Weststrate, Stanek and Ysasi. Student Representatives: Lindberg and Jae Baek. Absent: Paterson (excused) and Van Oosterhout. City Staff: Fifelski and Councilmember Hoekstra. Weststrate stated that Van Oosterhout has requested not to be re-appointed to the International Relations Commission. Fifelski to follow-up. IV. Student Representative Updates. None. V. Commission Business. A. Approval of the April 5, 2018 Meeting Minutes. Motion to approve meeting minutes with name correction to Wilson from English by Commissioner Wilson; supported by Commissioner Stanek. Motion carries. B. Next Meeting: June 7, 2018. Location: City Hall 2 nd Floor Training Room at 5:30 p.m. 1) Consideration of Summer Schedule. Commission will meet in June and August. 2) Reappointments will be added to next Agenda. Reappointments include: Debra Weststrate and JoAnn Patterson. 3) Consideration of Chair-Elect will be added to the June Agenda. VI. Chair Report 1) Soccer Game Coordination (Van Oosterhout) -No Update 2) School Exchanges. (Fifelski) No update. Fifelski will follow-up at Holland Christian later this month. At our last meeting they said they would provide update in May/June time line as they need to work with their leadership. 3) Coffee House Exchange (Van Oosterhout) No Update. 4) Tourism Exchange (Fifelski) The citizen cultural exchange was wonderful. The schedule was full. One passenger fell ill and was admitted to hospital in Mexico. It was a very positive experience. The group met with officials at the Tourism Board. Fifelski is meeting with Susan Hunter at Pathfinder for best practices for next trip in 2020. A list of recommendations based on this year s recommendations from the cultural trip were developed (see attached). 5) Brewery/ Wine exchange (long-term plan). No Update 6) Business Commerce. Fifelski was not able to meet with MEDC representative in Queretaro. Conference Call scheduled at later date to discuss World Trade Week on May 9, 2019 at the Van Andel Institute. Citizen Group did meet with Tourism representative. They shared some of the activities that they are
VII. VIII. planning and discussed opportunities for artist participation, film collaboration and scheduling a visit to Queretaro in 2020. The Citizen Cultural Group visited Parque Holland, where we noted significant damage to park equipment. We talked about International visit and invitation that will go to the Mayor in Queretaro after the disposition of Mayoral election. 7) International Festival. Fifelski shortlisted the Chamber spreadsheet. The list will be send to commission to assign their names as contacts. We do not need to make contacts yet. Letters to potential entertainers requesting participation. They are required to send electronic performance vimeo for review by end of September. Esther to send Call for Design to local high schools and Career Tech Line. Commissioner Wilson will reach out to Shannon Carlson. 8) Tulip Time Parade. Fifelski, Patterson, Wilson and Van Oosterhout will not be participating in the Tulip Time Parade. Ysasi will pick up banners and extra t- shirts from City Hall. Sara Sanchez is going to get flags from Hope College. We have had 3 individuals from LG Chem willing to march and 2 dutch dancers marching. 9) Yanfeng Automotive Parade of Nations: Commissioner Stanek will provide details as we get closer to the date. SAVE THE DATE: June 4, 2018 at Holland Tech Center. 10) Ordinance Update. Items requested by Councilmember Hoekstra were included in the package.
