Angelika Pitsela graduated from the Law School of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki in Greece with support from the State Scholarships Foundation (I.K.Y.) during the course of her studies. She obtained her Ph.D. at the Law School of the Albert- Ludwigs University of Freiburg (Germany). She has worked for the Criminological Research Group of the Max-Planck Institute for Foreign and International Criminal Law in Freiburg (under scholarship of the Max Planck Society) and for the Criminological Institute of the University of Cologne. Dr. Pitsela serves as an Associate Professor of Criminology - Penology at the Department of Criminal Law and Criminology, Law School of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, and teaches under- and postgraduate level Criminology, Juvenile Law, Penology and Economic Penal Law. Additionally, she gives courses in German on Juvenile Criminal Law, Criminology, and Penology to students of European Universities under the auspices of LLP/ERASMUS Program as well as to students of the faculties/schools of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki. Her teaching appointments in the areas of Juvenile Law, Criminology and Penology are: UNESCO Chair on Education for Human Rights, Democracy and Peace of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki National School of Judges and Prosecutors in Thessaloniki The Police Academy in Veria (previously in Thermi - Thessaloniki) Programs and seminars of postgraduate training/lifelong Learning Program under the title Combating of the Drug Dependency in the Framework of the Penal Correction of the Therapy Centre for Dependent Individuals (KETHEA) in collaboration with the Department of Criminal Law and Criminology of the Law School of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki and the Department of Psychiatry of the University of San Diego, California Centre for the Integration of Ex-Prisoners (EPANODOS) Central Scientific Council for the Prevention and Combating of Victimization and Criminality of Minors in cooperation with the National Centre for Social Solidarity (EKKA) for the training of social workers of the Child Protection Teams of the municipalities of the country. She has frequently served as a representative of the Department of Criminal Law and Criminology in the General Assembly of the Law Faculty, and as a representative of the Law Faculty in the Committee of Social Policy of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki (2004-2013). She was the Director of the Department of Criminal Law and Criminology during the academic year 2013-2014. Dr. Pitsela s research interests are focused on the field of juvenile justice, penitentiary law and policy, economic crime, and social welfare as related to criminal justice and research on criminality and victimization of vulnerable groups, i.e. juveniles, women, the elderly, and immigrants. She has published books, studies and articles (either alone or in cooperation with others) concerning victimization of migrants, juvenile delinquency, assessment of seriousness of crime, female delinquency and imprisonment, domestic violence, economic crime, European and international prison rules and policy, and juvenile justice comparative law.
