Hi everyone, The Northern District has two big events coming up within the next couple of weeks. SF Pride Celebration will take place next weekend, June 27th and June 28th. People from all over the world come to this event to celebrate. The festivities take place at Civic Center from Noon to 6pm on Saturday and Noon to 7pm on Sunday. Sunday is also the day of the big parade. The parade kicks off at 10:30am at Market and Beale and ends at Market and 8th. For more information on the festivities and parade route, go to www.sfpride.org. The Fillmore Street Jazz Festival kicks off on July 4th and runs until July 5th. Every summer the Fillmore Street Jazz Festival welcomes guests who gather to celebrate a prosperous tradition of jazz, culture and cuisine. The fun starts at 10am and runs until 6pm both days. The Festival runs on Fillmore between Jackson and Eddy. San Francisco s SAFE is offering a free car seat safety workshop. Safety research has shown that even when car seats are used, almost all are installed improperly. This quick workshop helps parents and caregivers find the right car seat for your child s age and size, and shows you how to install the car seat to keep your child safe. Receive a free car seat and a Baskin Robbins gift certificate when you attend. The workshop takes place on Monday, July 20th from 5:30pm to 7:00pm in the Northern Station Community Room. Due to the hard work of the officers at Northern Station and the cooperation and assistance of the citizens within the community, the Northern District has only had one Homicide in 2009. The homicide was at Eddy and Laguna on 02/07. This is a reminder that the Budget Hearings resume on Monday, June 22nd at 5:00pm, in the Board Chambers at City Hall Room 250. Public comment for the 2009/2010 Annual Budget will be heard. The Mayor s Office of Criminal Justice is launching a safety blog to keep people in San Francisco safe and informed. The blog draws together reports and updates from the City s many public safety partners. This includes weekly updates from the SFPD s 10 district station Captains. These reports summarize activity in each district and explain how each district Captain is deploying his or her officers in response. Make sure you check out www.sfpublicsafety.blog.com. Here are some of the great arrests that were made in the last several weeks. ARRESTS 2
June 14, 12:15pm, Burglary (vehicle), Possession of Stolen Property, Failure to register as a Sex Offender Arrest: Officer Griffin and Officer Byrne were working plainclothes when they responded to an auto burglary in the area of Lombard and Pierce. The officers remembered seeing a suspicious vehicle in that area earlier in the day so they began looking for it (they even remembered the license plate). They located the vehicle in the area of Golden Gate and Van Ness Ave. The vehicle was stopped and the occupants detained. Officers made contact with the victim who told them the items which were missing from her vehicle. The officers located those items in the vehicle they had stopped. The subjects were now placed under arrest. Witnesses to the incident were able to positively identify the suspects. The suspects were booked on various charges. One of the subjects was a sex registrant who failed to register. June 14, 1:00am, Burglary (vehicle), Parole Violation and Narcotic Arrest: Officer Hayes and Officer Ramos responded to Van Ness and Post regarding an auto boost. The officers had a description of the suspect and officers set out to look for him. Officer Cronin located the suspect nearby who was still holding the GPS he had just stolen out of the vehicle. (PLEASE TAKE YOU GPS WITH YOU WHEN YOU LEAVE YOUR VEHICLE). The witness positively identified the suspect and the suspect was placed under arrest. During a search of the suspect the officers located a crack pipe. A computer check showed the suspect was on parole. A parole hold was also placed on the suspect. June 13, 2:25pm, Narcotic Arrest: Officer Cesena was on his bike, patrolling his beat, when he observed a possible drug transaction at Larkin and Golden Gate. Officer Cesena made contact with one of the subjects who told him he had just bought drugs. (crack) The subject showed Officer Cesena five rocks. The officer seized the crack and placed the subject under arrest. The other subject was not located. The subject was booked. 3
June 12, 5:15pm, Driving with no license issued, Speeding and Traffic Violation Arrest: Officers Gabriel and Kerow were on patrol in the area of Webster and Fulton when they observed a vehicle speeding. The vehicle also had no license plates on it. The officers stopped the vehicle and made contact with the driver. The driver did not have a license and he was only 15 years old. The driver was cited for his offense and release to a guardian. June 14, 9:00pm, Found Person and Warrant Arrest: Recruit Officer Kohrs and FTO Reyes responded to the 500 block of Van Ness regarding a missing juvenile who also had a warrant for her arrest. An FBI agent with the Child Exploitation Unit was relaying information to our dispatcher. The officers located the juvenile who gave them a false name. The juvenile matched the description given to them by the FBI agent so the juvenile was transported to Northern Station. The juvenile later gave her real name. The juvenile was booked for an outstanding probation warrant. June 13, 12:15pm, Shoplifting and Warrant Arrest: Officers Kerow and Officer Gabriel responded to the 1300 blk of Webster Street regarding a shoplifter being detained. Security told the officers the suspect stole over one hundred dollars worth of meat which she hid in her purse. The suspect left the store where security detained her. Security signed a citizen s arrest and the suspect was arrested for the theft and for an outstanding shoplifting warrant. June 13, 10:00am, Narcotic and Warrant Arrest: Officer Lee responded to the 1500 block of Sutter St regarding trespassers. The manager said no one was registered in the room but there was a dog barking inside. The officer went to the room and made contact with the occupants. One of the occupants had an outstanding warrant, was in possession of a crack pipe and narcotics. He was booked at Northern Station. The other occupant was cited and released for trespassing. June 12, 10:30am, Burglary (house) Probation and Narcotic Arrest: Officer Horan and Officer Horan (not related) responded to the 300 block of Lily regarding a burglary in progress. Dispatch obtained a description of the suspect which was broadcasted to 4
other responding units. Officer Frias and Officer Roman located the suspect nearby. The victim told the officers she was getting ready for work when she heard some noise that did not sound right. When she went to investigate the suspect was in her house. The victim ran out of the house. A witness observed the suspect running from the scene. The officers conducted an investigation and the suspect was placed under arrest for the burglary. The officers also located narcotics on the subject. The suspect was booked at Northern Station. June 13, 5:00pm, Stay Away Order and Probation Violation Arrest: Officer Minkel and Officer Needham were patrolling the Plaza East Housing Projects when they observed two subjects running and jumping into a vehicle with no license plates. The officers have had numerous contacts with the subjects and know one was on felony probation and had a stay away order from the area. The offices stopped the vehicle and took the subject into custody. The subject was booked. June 12, 11:30pm, Narcotic and Felony Warrant Arrest: Officer Neal and Officer Landi (Motorcycle officers) were working violence reduction in the Northern District when they observed a seat belt violation. They stopped the driver and a computer check showed the driver did not have a valid driver s license and he also had a felony warrant for his arrest. The subject was placed under arrest. During a search of the subject the officers located a baggie that contained crystal meth. June 16, 10:00pm, Robbery with Gun Arrest: Officer O Donnell and Officer Evans responded to Washington and Van Ness regarding a robbery with a gun. The officers made contact with the victim who told them the suspect approached him and asked for his laptop. The suspect then showed the victim a gun. The victim quickly walked away but he suspect followed. The suspect came up behind the victim and put his hand in his pocket. The victim tried to get away. There was a slight struggle over a bag the suspect was trying to take from the victim. The victim began yelling for help. The suspect ran from the scene but was quickly apprehended by officers in the area. The suspect was identified by the victim and placed under arrest. The officers diligently searched the area but were unable to locate a gun. 5
June 15, Parole and Weapon Violation Arrest: Officer Ferreira responded to Franklin and Fern regarding a subject with a 12 inch knife. Officer Ferreira made contact with the witness who told him the subject was waving the knife around and he feared for people s safety. Officer Ferreira located the subject who told him he was on parole and the knife he was looking for was in his bag. The subject was detained. The officer made contact with the subject s parole officer who placed a parole hold on him. The subject was placed under arrest and booked. June 15, 9:00pm, Battery on a Police Officer, Resisting Arrest and Trespassing: Officer Evans and Officer Morris responded to the 1100 block of Gough regarding a fight. One party wanted the other to leave the premise but he refused. Since the subject did not live there, the officers asked him to leave. After several requests by the officer, the subject refused to leave. The officers went to place him under arrest and the subject tried to pull away. The subject fought with the officers, slightly injuring them in the process. With the help of additional units the officers were able to take the subject into custody. The subject was booked. June 16, 1:30am, Narcotic Arrest: Officer Daugherty and Officer Cronin were patrolling the area of Pine and Franklin when they observed a vehicle with expired registration. They stopped the vehicle and made contact with the driver and the four occupants. The driver had several narcotics arrests in the past and agreed to let the officers search his vehicle. The officers located crack cocaine. The driver and a passenger were arrested and booked. MISCELLANEOUS WARRANT ARRESTS Most of these warrant arrests are made by officers who are being pro active. They see a subject violating a traffic code (jay walking) or some other violation and it s an on view take on. Due to their 6

It is unfortunate that an incident like this brings to light the importance of strong communication with children and instilling them with the knowledge of what to do in a situation that makes them uncomfortable and could potentially be dangerous. Parents, caregivers and those that work with children should discuss and plan ways to be safe as possible. Here are a few tips for you and your children: 7
Keep open communication with your children. Discuss all types of safety with them. Allow kids to tell you what makes them fearful, and encourage them to communicate their feelings on being safe Teach them how to recognize potentially dangerous situations; whether it s with someone they know, or someone they don t know Always play or travel with a friend Always tell an adult where you are going, even if it s just across the street to a friend s house Sometimes it ok to say no to an adult. Talk about the times when they need to listen to adults and when it s appropriate to say no Get to know your children s friends and family If a child is spending time at home alone, make rules for the house with the child s help. Discuss the rules and the reasons for having each one in place Talk about the difference between strangers and trusted adults with children. Encourage them to share with you when they are uncomfortable with trusted adults. Children need to know which adults they can go to in case of an emergency (police officers, trusted neighbors, relatives, etc.) Go over some lures or tricks that dangerous people may use; offer a ride in vehicle, offer candy, gifts, money, jobs, helping locate a lost animal or showing the kids a puppy/kitten If a child feels that he/she is in danger----yell, RUN AND TELL. Once the San Francisco Department of Emergency Management determines what emergency services are needed, they will then process your call. If you are on a freeway in San Francisco and dial 911, your call will be answered by either by the San Francisco Department of Emergency Management Services or the California Highway Patrol Dispatch Center.
