I. By 1600 Spain had colonized much of the New World A. Mexico, Florida New Mexico, Texas, Caribbean Island II. The Columbian Exchange and Triangular Trade allowed the Spanish colonies to become profitable III. The incredible wealth of Spanish colonies led other na6ons to want colonies of their own

English Colonies I. The success of the Spanish colonies in Central and South America led England to desire colonies of her own II. Colonies that would provide wealth to the the mother country A. Mother country = na6on that founded the colonies B. Colonies = cash III. Since Spain focused on S. America; England selected a loca6on in N. America

Roanoke Island (Lost Colony) I. Sir Walter Raleigh agempted to establish the first English seglement in North America in 1585 II. The colony was segled at Roanoke Island in North Carolina III. Queen Elizabeth I gave Raleigh a charter A. Charter = document that allowed colonists to live on land owned by the mother country à be a part of the mother country

Roanoke Island (1st Time) I. Roanoke became the 1 st English colony in the USA A. Unsuccessful II. It failed due to hunger and bad rela6ons with the Na6ve Americans. IV. Everyone but 15 men went back to England on a ship (all died)

Roanoke Island (2nd Time) I. In 1587 Raleigh sent colonists a second 6me II. All 15 men that stayed behind were dead III. John White became the colony s governor IV. Colonist brought their wives and children V. White s granddaughter, Virginia Dare was born on August 18, 1587 and was the first English baby born in the USA.

Life at Roanoke I. Supplies ran low at Roanoke and Governor White decided to return to England for help II. When he arrived; Spain went to war with England in 1587. A. White was not allowed to return to Roanoke B. All English ships had to stay to fight back against the Spanish Armada III. The Spanish Armada agacked and was defeated by the English navy A. The Spanish navy was crippled and couldn t fight B. England and France would now lead future coloniza6on efforts in the New World. C. Spain would be lej out of future coloniza6on IV. White was eventually allowed to return to Roanoke

The Lost Colony I. When White returned in August 1590 he found no colonists on Roanoke Island. II. On one of the trees was wrigen CROATOAN. A. The colony had vanished B. No survivors were ever found C. Historians have no idea where the Lost Colony ended up III. To this day the fate of the lost colony is one of history s greatest mysteries

SigniAicance of Roanoke I. Even though the Roanoke Colony was unsuccessful it s6ll has historical significance II. The Roanoke Colony paved the way for other English seglers to arrive in the new world A. Roanoke laid the founda6on for Jamestown & Plymouth in the 1600 s III. The Lost Colony was the first founding of the USA and our na6on traces back to Roanoke Island
