Newsletter - June 3, 2008 by Carol Beese Notes: Guests & Friends of the Club today There were four Guests and/or Friends of the Club today: Jeff Arnett, Steve Mates, Andres Montenegro, and Ron Hamelberg from the Breakfast Rotary. Carol Beese is the Bulletin Editor for the month of June. Jeff Arnett has applied for membership in our Club. Please welcome and introduce yourself to Jeff as he goes through his 2-week application period. Rotary shirts may be ordered in navy or tan for $20. Contact Steve Kuehl now so that shirts will be here in time to wear at the Brat Tent. Our Rotary Day at the Brat Tent is Thursday, July 3 and every hour worked is credited and affects the total dollars our club receives. Sign up to work.it's fun! A special shopping day has been scheduled on June 24 to buy food and supplies for Barrington's Food Pantry. Our Club will receive a $1,000 special grant for the project, thanks to the efforts of service chair Jane Washburn; additional funding will be given from our club coffers. Alexis Portugal has found a host family for our soon-to-arrive German exchange student. She thanked John Gillette for his help. Ron Hamelberg announced that Barrington's Relay for Life would be held on the grounds of Good Shepherd Hospital on June 12. Please visit our Sponsors. To place your ad click here. Club Site Sponsors Speaker/Program Summary: Our meeting was held at the Barrington Community Scout Cabin which was, of course, the topic of the program. David Chidley, executive director of the facility, proudly outlined the Cabin's 74 year history of providing local youth groups with a safe, secure, convenient meeting

place. Built in l934 and operated by volunteers ever since, the Cabin is one of only a few similar, volunteer-run operations in the United States. Constructed during the Depression, the Cabin's volunteer list is a Who's Who of early Barrington. Prominent among its supporters was our own Harold Lipofsky who actually helped carve one of the lighting fixtures. Today the Cabin averages about 200 meetings per year and is open to all Barrington clubs. The Barrington Noon Rotary has been a supporter for many years. (Just a note.perhaps it was the acoustics, perhaps the mood of a rainy day, but our singing was superb and on tune!) Please visit our Site Sponsors. To place your ad click here. This was a very good meeting thanks to the following Rotarians in attendance: Jim Arie, Don Arndtsen, Larry Barnett, Belinda Bauer, Carol Beese, Deb Cleverdon, Joe Connelly, John Cox, Ron Dockery, John Gillett, Mike Gilmore, Burke Groom, Ralph Jensen, Susan Kern, Steve Kuehl, December LaMontagne, Harold Lipofsky, Kurt Marquardt, Reese Mates, Dick Miller, Mike Pinter, Alexis Portugal, Norval Stephens, Dave Tabak, Carol Thompson-Erker, Carl Walsh, Jane Washb urn, and Ri ck Wokoun. Dates to Remember: June 26, 6:30 p.m., President Installation Dinner for Mike Pinter at Francesca's Restaurant, downtown Barrington. Please check the website: http://www.barringtonrotaryclub.org/ for important upcoming dates. For trouble logging in, please contact Burke.

Fun & Frolics: Many members gave correct answers to John Gillett's quiz questions; however, dollars were collected from everyone, regardless of our super knowledge. Drawing: Don Arndtsen won the $10.00 December LaMontagne picked the clear marble. The pot rolls over and I think it is now worth more than $300.00 with about 16 marbles left. Sincerely, Carol Beese, June Bulletin Editor to be replaced by Jane Washburn (thank you, Jane.) Meet our new Youth Exchange Student by Alexis Portugal Volker Schwindt will be the new Barrington Rotary Club's Exchange Student due to arrive in August 2008. Please let us know if you are interested in hosting Volker or know of anyone who may be interested. To top it off, The Gates Foundation will then match 100% of the amount donated by the Rotary Club and Rotary International.
