Ancient Greece Ancient Greece has a huge impact on our culture. It influences many parts of the United States today. Our country s democratic government was first used by Ancient Greece. They had the first democracy in the world. That is when the citizens of a country choose its leaders. Ancient Greeks even started the idea of a trial with a jury. The Ancient Olympics originally began in Athens, Greece. We still enjoy the Modern Olympics today. The Ancient Greeks also first created the columns that you see in front of homes and courthouses. You can see examples of columns on many monuments and buildings in Washington, D.C. Ancient Greece also has an important influence on doctors today. In fact, that is where the first medical school was formed. 20 27 38 48 60 69 78 90 99 107 7 126 What ideas did the Ancient Greeks begin? What type of government did Ancient Greece have? Where can we see examples of columns?

Olympics Greece is the home of the Olympic games. It was an athletic competition, and a celebration and religious festival to honor the god Zeus. Athletes competed in running, chariot and horse races, javelin throwing, jumping, and wrestling. Winners were given a wreath of olive branches. In Ancient Greece only men could participate in the Olympics. People now travel all over the world to compete in the modern day Olympics. Modern day Olympics are held every four years. Both men and women are now allowed to participate. There is now a winter Olympics, as well as a summer Olympics. The next winter Olympics will be in 2014 in Russia, and the next summer Olympics will be in 2016 in Brazil. Olympic winners receive a gold, silver, or bronze metal. 19 28 36 45 55 66 75 85 96 107 9 127 Who could participate in the Ancient Greek Olympics? Who can participate in the modern Olympics? What do modern day Olympic winners receive? How are the two Olympics different?

Mountains There are two major mountain ranges in the United States. One of the mountain ranges is the Appalachian Mountains. They can be found in the eastern part of the United States from Canada to the middle of Alabama. They are over 1,500 miles long. Since the Appalachian Mountains are very old, they have eroded and are not tall mountains. Some scientists think these mountains are the oldest mountains in the world. The second longest mountain range is the Rocky Mountains. The Rockies can be found in the western part of the United States. They start in Canada and end in New Mexico ranging from over 3,000 miles. The Rocky Mountains are much younger than the Appalachian Mountains and are very tall. The sharp pointy peaks can be over 10,000 feet above sea level. 10 19 31 42 52 62 72 81 92 103 2 121 132 133 What is the oldest mountain range in the United States? longitude and latitude Latitude and longitude are imaginary lines drawn on maps. They help us locate places on the earth. Latitude is distance north or south of the equator. The equator is an imaginary circle around the earth halfway between the North Pole and the South Pole. Longitude is distance east or west of the prime meridian. The prime meridian is an imaginary line running from north to south through Greenwich, England. Longitude and latitude are measured in degrees. The Equator is the line of zero degrees latitude. The equator is the starting point for measuring latitude. Longitude is measured in degrees east or west of the prime meridian. This means one half of the world is measured in degrees of east longitude, and the other half in degrees of west longitude. 9 20 31 42 53 63 71 81 92 100 1 122 131 What direction do lines of longitude run? levels of government Government is a group that sets laws and runs a community. Local government is what leads a town or city. State government is what leads a state. National government leads the entire country. Laws may differ between communities, states, and the nation. Local and state laws cannot conflict with national laws. The mayor is the elected leader of local government. Some communities also have city councils. The local government runs the school system, organizes emergency services, and sets laws to keep its members safe. The state government runs the entire state. The governor is the elected leader of a state government. Each state also elects two senators and representatives to represent their state in the national government. State government is in charge of the state s education and health systems, protecting the state s environment, and building and maintaining roads. National government protects our country and our freedoms. 21 30 38 48 59 67 74 83 100 0 8 126 136 144 151 154

Other members of the executive branch include the Vice President and the Cabinet. The President is seen as the leader of the US Government. He or she is both the head of state and the Commander-in-Chief of the US armed forces. One of the main powers of the President is the power to sign legislation from Congress into law or to veto it. There are 435 total Representatives in the House of Representatives. Each state has a different number of representatives depending on their total population. judicial branch The judicial branch of government is made up of judges and courts. At the top of the judicial branch is the Supreme Court. Supreme Court justices are appointed for life. They can only be removed from office by death or by Congress. This is so they can make decisions based on what they think is right and not on what they feel they need to do to get elected. The job of the courts is to interpret the laws of the Congress. They do not make laws. If accused of a crime, a person has the right to a fair trial before a judge and a jury. When a country buys goods from another country, the goods are called imports. The exchange of imports and exports is called trade. A good trade should help both countries. If people in the United States need sugar, but do not have the right climate to grow sugar, they import it. They would import sugar from a country where it grows easily.
