Shari explained there are 13 different bat species in Central Florida, with the Brazilian Free Tailed Bat being the most common. The Brazilian bat is not from Brazil, but rather it s just the name. Bats are very important to insect control. One bat can eat as many as 3,000 mosquitos in one night! Shari warned about the dangers to bats created by pesticides and herbicides. She encouraged participants to try to use a minimal amount of pesticides at their homes. Shari also explained that trimming of cabbage palms should be done in the fall so as not to harm bats who frequently use the cabbage palm for raising their young in the spring. After the presentation, participants were able to meet two live bats Shari is rehabilitating. Household Hazardous Waste Collection Event 9 We would like to thank Shari Blissett-Clark for such an informative, interesting and fun presentation. We plan to have Shari and her bats back again soon at the EDC!
