The development of religious, economic and cultural theories aiming at legitimizing the colonization process grew up in connection with the increasing global interactions between Europe and the Outer World. By comparing the different features of the European expansion towards America and Asia, particular attention will be devoted to the most recent interpretations of Global and Connected History. Global History Prof. Silvio Pons; Prof. Elisabetta Bini The course analyzes major political, cultural and social developments in Europe and between Europe and the rest of the world, from the late XVIII century to the beginning of the XXI century. It will consider the ways in which European countries intersected processes of nation-building with imperial expansion in Africa, the Middle East, and Asia. It is organized as a sort of journey around the world, surfing across the two main historical dimensions of time and space. Based on an institutional approach, it will compare the varieties of capitalism of the different regions, considering State and firm as main actors of the analysed processes. Foundations of European Thought Prof. Lorenzo Perilli The course aims at providing with a common background about the origin and development of the most important features peculiar to European thought, and at giving them the intellectual instruments to understand the issues which make Europe different from, or similar to, other cultures.
