Director s Report

BOISE PUBLIC LIBRARY Library Director s Report January 2019 HOLIDAY PROGRAM HIGHLIGHTS In December, the Library! at Collister hosted its annual Sing-Along. The event featured local musician, Thomas Paul. More than 45 community members attended to sing favorite holiday classics. The Collister staff also hosted Santa s Workshop. The event brought in 120 participants who decorated holiday cookies, created pine cone animals, and snowman lanterns. The attendees also created holiday cards that were delivered to neighbors in assisted living homes. The much-anticipated annual Harry Potter Yule Ball was held in Youth Services at the Main Library. This year, more than 50 teens joined the party. Food, games, and crafts were enjoyed by all! CURBSIDE PICKUP SERVICE LAUNCHED AT THE LIBRARY! at BOWN CROSSING The Library! at Bown Crossing successfully launched curbside pickup service on December 18. Customers may now call the Library from the designated curbside pickup parking spot behind the building and have their holds checked out and brought to their vehicle by library staff. HALF-GIG AUDIO KICKOFF PARTY Local violinist Laura Geier performed at the launch party for Half-Gig Audio, the Library s new streaming collection of local music. The Library began accepting submissions for its debut line-up in January. This new platform will enable the Library to collect and share music created and performed by local musicians. LITERATURE FOR LUNCH: MELVILLE S MOBY-DICK The long-standing program Literature for Lunch, run by faculty at Boise State University (BSU) and hosted in the Marion Bingham Room at the Main Library each month, has wrapped up its four-month focus on Moby Dick. The Hemingway Literary Center of the English Department at BSU is celebrating 200 years since Melville s birth, and the Literature for Lunch meeting on December 7 featured the celebrated Melville scholar and BSU professor Steven Olsen-Smith. DINNER AND A BOOK The Friends of the Boise Public Library and Flying Pie Pizzaria co-sponsored the Library s annual Dinner and a Book Event in November as part of the Idaho Family Reading Week program. The program is designed to promote the value of reading together as a family. Each location hosted an evening that included reading books while enjoying pizza, salad, and ice cream. Total attendance was 253 for all five locations. Children who participated received a book as part of the night s festivities.

Most libraries no longer bind periodicals and now rely on databases such as ProQuest to locate and obtain individual articles if the publisher itself does not provide past articles online. Due to space constraints, printed back issues are typically kept for just several years, circulated, and, relative to the pre-online database era, weeded quickly. Also, the vast majority of libraries now rely on an ILS to keep track of holdings. In short, "If it has a bar code, it's a volume."
