Inside this issue: A Word From Our President Lawyer Representatives for the U.S. District Court Community Events: Nevada Women s Fund 2 2 2 Carla B. Higginbotham is currently an Assistant United States Attorney in the criminal division of the United States Attorney s Office for the District of Nevada. Ms. Higginbotham is the District of Nevada s Coordinator for the Project Safe Childhood initiative, which is a national initiative for the Department of Justice focused on combating crimes against children. She is solely responsible for prosecuting crimes involving child exploitation such as child pornography related crimes, juvenile sex trafficking, internet luring and enticement. She serves as the U.S. Attorney s Office point of contact for the FBI Innocence Lost Task Force which investigates and prosecutes crimes involving juvenile sex trafficking. She is also the point of contact for the Northern Nevada FBI Cyber Crimes Task Force and Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force which both investigate and prosecute cases involving on-line child exploitation. Prior to becoming a federal prosecutor, Ms. Higginbotham was an associate attorney with the law firm of McDonald Carano Wilson LLP where her practice focused primarily in the areas of appellate, commercial, civil, and privacy related litigation. Ms. Higginbotham has a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Speech Communications with a minor in Business Administration from the University of Nevada, Reno and has a juris doctorate degree, with great distinction, from the University of the Pacific, McGeorge School of Law. Ms. Higginbotham s presentation on May 19th will include an update on sex trafficking in Nevada and will address how to combat the problem from the federal perspective. The cost of the luncheon will be $25 for members in advance, $30 for non-members in advance, and $35 at the door. We had a terrific turnout and had the opportunity to mingle with both new and familiar faces. For those of you who would like to join us at our next social, please look for future save the dates for our July hike and happy hour. On May 19th, NNWLA has the pleasure of hosting Assistant United States Attorney Carla Higginbotham for a lunch presentation at Mario s Portofino in Reno. Ms. Higginbotham will be providing us with an update on federal sex trafficking laws. Ms. Higginbotham is the District of Nevada s Coordinator for the Project Safe Childhood initiative, a national initiative for the Department of Justice, which focuses on combating crimes against children. If you were unable to attend NNWLA s Outstanding Woman Lawyer Award Banquet for Judge Schumacher in March, you still have an opportunity to honor this extraordinary woman. The Nevada Women s Fund will be inducting Judge Schumacher into their annual hall of fame at their 2015 Salute to Women of Achievement Luncheon on Thursday, May 28th at John Ascuaga s Nugget. Finally, I wish everyone a Happy Mother s Day whether you are a mom yourself or celebrating with that special person who has been a mom to you! Lawyer Representatives for the U.S. District Court The United States District Court for the District of Nevada is accepting applications for Lawyer Representatives. Lawyer Representatives provide vital input to the Court on a myriad of issues affecting the operations of the federal courts including but not limited to: rule changes; development of new programs; design of new court facilities and the expenditure of funds from the non-appropriated account. If you are interested in serving as a Lawyer Representative you must submit a letter of interest detailing your federal experience and reasons you would like to be considered by May 29, 2015 addressed to: Mr. Lance S. Community Events: Nevada Women s Fund Luncheon The Nevada Women s Fund is hosting its 2015 Salute to Women of Achievement Luncheon on May 28, 2015, from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. at the J.A. Nugget in the Rose Ballroom. The Nevada Women s Fund has invited NNWLA members to attend this special event, where Judge Schumacher will be inducted into the organization s hall of fame. The keynote speaker of the event is Dr. Connie Mariano, MD, FACP, who served nine years in the White House as the physician to three Presidents. The Nevada Women s Fund was founded in 1982 and works with community donors and supporters to raise financial contributes and other resources to support northern Nevada women and families. The Nevada Women s Fund is dedicated to strengthening our community by empowering women to improve their lives and those of their families. LAWYER REPRESENTATIVES FOR UNITED STATES DISTRICT COURT The United States District Court for the District of Nevada is accepting applications for Lawyer Representatives. Lawyer Representatives provide vital input to the Court on a myriad of issues affecting the operations of the federal courts including, but not limited to: rule changes; development of new programs; design of new court facilities and the expenditure of funds from the non-appropriated account. To be considered for one of these positions, you must be: 1) admitted to practice in the U.S. District Court of Nevada and actively involved in federal practice; 2) interested in the purpose and framework of the Circuit Conference and willing and able to actively contribute to the creation of the District Conference, and; 3) willing to assist in implementing conference and district court programs with local bar associations. Lawyer Representatives are also expected to attend the Ninth Circuit Judicial Conference. In addition to the above criteria, a goal of the Court in the selection of Lawyer Representatives is to ensure the chosen attorneys represent a cross-section of practitioners in federal court which specialize in civil, criminal, appellate and bankruptcy matters. Lawyer Representatives are elected to serve a three year term.
