o o o Advisement Scheduling Web and Social Media Big Data Research Computing Facility on SIU Campus The IT Research Computing and Cyberinfrastructure team has been busy recently to set up new computing facility on campus. These new computing and storage capacity provide much more opportunity for Big Data research and development on the horizon. As you may know IT Research Computing leases 100 TB of research storage from IT Systems Dell Compellent SAN environment. Half of the 100 TB have been allocated to various research projects at this time but utilization is relatively low. IT is working on renewing our storage lease for another year until we can acquire and deploy centralized research storage. If your Big Data or related project has significant research storage needs, please let me know. The mid-range HPC computing environment that we recently acquired is here on campus in the Wham Data Center and IT is currently working out cluster software stack issues and OpenStack environment. The mid-range HPC environment will likely start to become available in late April. Women in Cyber Security (WiCyS) 2015 Kylee Williams, majoring in Computer Forensics and Networking and Computer Science, Jolene Hatchett, majoring in Computer Support and Networking, and Jessa Gramenz, majoring in Computer Forensics and Network Security, Sue Zamora and Prof. Belle Woodward, IST Associate Professor, attended WiCyS 2015, a two-day conference for Women in Cyber Security, in Atlanta, Georgia. WiCyS is an effort to bring together women (students/faculty/researchers/professionals) in cybersecurity from academia, research and industry for sharing of knowledge/experience, networking and mentoring. The conference, funded by the National Science Foundation along with industry and educational sponsors, offered workshops, panel talks, mentoring sessions, research presentations and a host of keynote speakers including Phyllis Schneck, Deputy Under Secretary for Cybersecurity and Communications to the Department of Homeland Security. (See the picture below.) All three students from John A. Logan Community College felt the conference was a tremendous opportunity for personal and professional growth. Jessa said of the conference, I felt it was really empowering. It was a good opportunity to network and find mentors. Kylee stated, What impressed me so much was how enlightened the women at the conference were. It s inspirational to see such strong female characters and the diversity that comes together. Ignorance is left behind in pursuit of a more technologically enlightened culture. Jolene added, We need the diversity in age, race, gender, and ethnicity. Everyone s opinion and perspective matters. We can all work together for the common good and make things happen. Find the strengths in everyone, put them together, and use them to achieve your desired outcome. Currently only 11% of cybersecurity professionals are women, and these students are working to increase that number. CONGRATULATIONS! Serving the Judicial Review Board (JRB) Dr. Stephen Shih, IST Professor Congratulations on being chosen to serve on the Judicial Review Board. Student-Oriented Research, Dr. Andrey Soares, IST Assistant Professor Under the leadership and supervision of Dr. Andrey Soares, Assistant Professor of Information Systems Technologies (IST), a team of IST students (Alex Glasnovich, Geovane Piccinin and Marcelo Bandeira da Silva) attended the 20th AITP National Collegiate Conference and Career Fair in Omaha, Nebraska, March 26-28, 2015. Geovane and Marcelo are visiting students from the Brazil's Science Without Borders program. More than 540 students attended the conference. This year's event had 14 technical competitions (http://aitpncc-contests.org). Our students participated in the Web Project contest, the Systems Analysis and Design contest, and the Database contest. They also presented the results of their web project, titled Tobacco User Profile Viewer (TUP Viewer). The TUP Viewer is an educational resource that will allow faculty and students to create fictitious case studies of patients who use tobacco. Students could use the tool to generate patient profile as the basis for a comprehensive treatment plan exercise or assessment. Dr. Joan Davis, Professor of Dental Hygiene, participated in all five phases of the web project with the roles of client and subject matter expert. 4
