Students will experience this incredible city for themselves in person, from its world-class museums, culture and shopping to the vibrant urban life that it s famous for. New York has it all, and we ll help students to jump right in! We bring the city to life for students with a customized curriculum and schedule that tells the story of New York through the experiences of successive waves of Catholic and other immigrants. Program & Services About the Program The Eastside Catholic spring break program introduces students to New York through the lenses of Catholic and immigrant experiences in the city. While Catholics in New York were once a marginalized minority facing anti-immigrant hostility, successive waves of immigration from Ireland, Italy and other nations during the 19th century slowly helped make the city and the nation more religiously tolerant and diverse. Today, New York and the United States is experiencing another surge of immigration, this time from across the globe. How does the experience of today s immigrants compare to that of their predecessors? How does the earlier Catholic immigrant experience inform the Church s and our own attitudes towards immigrants and immigration? These questions will guide the program as students explore this amazing city and its great landmarks, history and neighborhoods. Learning Outcomes and Final Project Through customized lectures, site visits and service learning, students will experience not only the famous sights of the city, they ll also come away with a deeper understanding of how migrants from different nations and eras have come to New York to build a new life. A final project will invite student teams to utilize their learning in New York to create short videos documenting the experiences and contributions of the city s different historical and contemporary immigrant groups. Services Included Mixture of classroom learning, service learning and site visits Accommodation in hotel Program includes breakfast, lunch and dinners Private transportation for airport pickup/drop off and most activities Activities as per calendar and contract (unless stated as optional) Closing ceremony dinner 24/7 standby support
