Take the Human Rights Act Challenge!

Transcription:

The Universal Declaration of Human Rights 1948 The idea of the Declaration was that people would have the freedom to enjoy these rights without the fear of something like the Holocaust happening again. The United Nations works towards this today. https://www.youtube.com/wat ch?v=bhmxzxsabm0

Liberal Democrats Democracy- Political Parties Starter: How many can you name?

Member of Parliament A person who is voted by their area to represent them at the Houses of Parliament.

Democracy A system of government where the people elect their representatives.

Constituency The area that is represented by an MP. The average number of people represented by each MP is about 70,000.

Democracy- Should the Voting Age be Lowered? Starter- How old do you have to be before you can do the following?: 1. Get married (without parents consent) 18 2. Drink alcohol in private 5 3. Have sex 16 4. Move out of the family home with parents consent 16 5. Join the army with parents consent 16 6. Apply for a Passport 16 7. Buy Cigarettes 18 8. Get a criminal record 10 9. Buy alcohol 18 10. Drive a car on the road 17 11. Serve on a Jury 18 12. Vote 18

Democracy- Should the Voting Age be Lowered? In recent years there has been growing support to change the voting age to 16. Labour, the Green Party and the Liberal Democrats have all supported this at one time or another in the last few years. At the 2017 election Labour and the Green Party both said they would lower the voting age if they won. The Scottish government led by the SNP allowed 16 year olds to vote in the 2014 referendum on whether or not Scotland should become an independent country.

Democracy- Should the Voting Age be Lowered? Arguments For: At 16 you are considered old/mature/responsible enough to do things like have sex and join the army. Some 18+ year olds are immature and irresponsible, maybe more than 16 year olds. Gives 16 year olds more chance of their voices being heard. Also considered responsible enough to do things like young carers. Political decisions directly affect their lives. Arguments Against: At 16 you haven t finished developing as a person. You would have to lower the voting age for EVERYONE- some 16 year olds are mature/responsible, some are not!! The vote shouldn t be pushed on kids. Problem of where do you stop?- decisions also affect the lives of younger children so then won t people say it should be lowered again? 16 year olds often don t have the same life experience - many still at school.

12/12/2017 Britishness- British Values 1. Personal Freedom. The idea that you are free to make your own choices. 2. Tolerating/Respecting Diversity. Britain is a multi-cultural society and therefore these different cultures must be respected. 3. Equal Opportunities for all. Everyone should have an equal chance in life. 4. Representative Democracy. Every adult in Britain should have a say in how the country is run. 5. Following British Laws. Everyone in Britain is expected to follow the same set of rules/laws, making it a fair society.

British Value Evidence it exists Evidence that we could do better at it. 1. Personal Freedom. 2. Tolerating/respecting diversity. 3. Equal opportunities for all. 4. Representative Democracy. 5. Following British laws.

The government wants to create a stronger sense of national identity. What are the strengths of this idea? What are the weaknesses of this idea? Is it important that we have a strong national identity? Explain your viewpoint.

Britishness- Cultural Diversity Britain is certainly a very multicultural society in many ways. Cities like London, Birmingham and Manchester are areas with huge cultural diversity. Immigration has continuously risen in recent years. This cultural diversity has influenced many aspects of life in Britain- can you think of any?

Britishness- Cultural Diversity However, more rural places like Cornwall, Devon and East Anglia still have very little cultural diversity. Because of this some people say that the UK isn t as culturally diverse as is often thought.

Opinions on Immigration- For, Against or Neutral? 1. People from different countries and cultures don t get along so best to keep them separate 2. If you make the rules too strict about asylum then you risk people being sent back to be persecuted 3. There aren t enough jobs around for people in the UK as it is, without letting others in. 4. There s no problem about people coming to the country, so long as they have good skills to use 5. Britain s past caused many problems in the world so it should now accept responsibility and allow poor people to live here 6. If people have a genuine case for seeking asylum, then of course they should be allowed to stay 7. The number of immigrants each year should equal the number of emigrants (people leaving the country) 8. The UK should set aside a set number of places for immigrants each year and not go over that number 9. The most powerful country in the world USA was founded by immigrants, so where s the problem? 10. The UK is more interesting because of the wide range of cultures here 11. Immigration should only take place in times of crisis such as major wars 12. There s a terrorist threat if you let just anyone in the country
