INSTRUCTIONS FOR APPLYING FOR OR RENEWING A GEORGIA WEAPONS CARRY LICENSE (The same application form is used for first time and renewal applicants.) WHAT IS REQUIRED AND WHAT DOCUMENTS DO I NEED WHEN I APPLY FOR A WEAPONS CARRY LICENSE? To apply for a Weapons Carry License, you must be 21 years of age or older, unless you are age 18 or older and provide proof that you have completed basic training in the armed forces of the United States and can provide proof (military I.D. or DD-214) that you are actively serving in the armed forces of the United States or have been honorably discharged from such service, and you must be a legal resident of Gwinnett County. To prove you are a resident of Gwinnett County, you must present a valid Georgia Driver's License or State issued I.D. with your Gwinnett County address. If your Gwinnett County address is not on your Driver's License or I.D. card, you may present alternate proof of your Gwinnett County address by providing documents such as a utility bill, lease, or closing documents, if buying a home. In order to qualify for a Georgia Weapons Carry License, you must also: 1. Be a citizen of the United States; or, 2. Be a Resident Alien and provide a valid Georgia Driver's License or State issued picture I.D. card, a valid Resident Alien card, and a Georgia Hunting License (which can be obtained by logging onto (www.georgiawildlife.com). 3. Be a Permanent Resident and provide a valid Georgia Driver's License or Georgia State issued picture I.D. card, and a Permanent Resident Card. 4. Employment authorization with a valid Georgia Driver s License or Georgia State issued picture I.D. and a Georgia Hunting License (which can be obtained by logging onto (www.georgiawildlife.com). If you are a renewing applicant you must provide proof that you have a valid Weapons Carry License, issued by any county in the State of Georgia, and you must file an application with the court within 90 days or less of your current Weapons Carry License s date of expiration or not more than 30 days after the expiration date. Proof of a valid license includes producing the original Weapons Carry License to the clerk or providing an original letter from the Probate Court in Georgia that issued your Weapons Carry License which indicates the Weapons Carry License is valid and the letter is not more than 10 days old. If you are unable to show you are eligible to renew your license you will apply as a new applicant. INSTRUCTIONS FOR COMPLETING THE APPLICATION FOR GEORGIA WEAPONS CARRY LICENSE Use blue or black ink to complete the application. NO WHITE OUT IS ALLOWED. Print neatly. Any illegible information on the application will delay the processing time of your permit. NO REFUNDS are given under any circumstances. APPLICATION FEES A new applicant will pay a TOTAL fee of $69.75 for their Permit. Please note that if you are a retired Law Enforcement Officer with arresting powers, having worked ten of the last twelve years prior to your retirement, Weapons Carry License fees are waived with the exception of a $7.00 fee for the photo permit. After completing your Weapons Carry License application, submitting the proper I.D., and a payment of $69.75 (cash, credit card (Visa, Master Card or Discover), or personal check to the Gwinnett County Probate Court no starter checks, third party checks, or business checks accepted), you may be fingerprinted at the Gwinnett County Probate Court. A renewal applicant will pay a TOTAL fee of $30.00 to the Gwinnett County Probate Court (see above for terms of payment). There are no fingerprinting requirements for a renewal applicant. FINGERPRINTING FOR WEAPONS CARRY LICENSE APPLICANTS Weapons Carry License applicants are fingerprinted at the Probate Court Office from 8:00am to 4:00pm, Monday through Friday. Because the Weapons Carry License application is a three step process, applications must be received each day no later than 4:00pm. You must be fingerprinted within five (5) business days of completing your application. The GBI and FBI will conduct a background check. After all records are returned to the Probate Court, and if your background check has met all the qualifications and requirements, your permit will be issued. REPLACEMENT LICENSE If your permit is lost, damaged, or stolen, you will need to notify the Gwinnett County Probate Court within 48 hours to receive a duplicate permit. It also makes it unlawful for any person to sell or otherwise dispose of a firearm or ammunition to any person knowing or having reasonable cause to believe that the recipient has been convicted of such a misdemeanor. This prohibition does apply to all law enforcement officers. And although the effective date of the law is September 30, 1996, it applies equally to convictions before or after the effective date.
