Commander s Column Greetings: I am looking forward to hearing Bruce Howell s program at our upcoming August 17th meeting to be held at Chow Pizza & Wings on Creedmoor Road. We held our first meeting here back in May and everyone seems to enjoy the location and food. At the NC Society Convention held in High Point on June 10th, our Chapter was selected to host the 2018 Society Convention in Raleigh on June 9th. I wish more of you could have attended the 80th General Convention of the Military Order of the Star and Bars July 6-8th down in Wilmington. That convention set some attendance records that may take some time to break. The new General Whiting Chapter in Wilmington did a great job Chapter News in assisting the North Carolina Society in hosting the event and people around the confederation are still talking about how much fun was had by all. Darin Roseman and I will give a report on the convention activities and display the two awards our Chapter won. Photos of the convention can be found on pages 1 and 5 of this newsletter. During the Wilmington Convention, the Order voted to raise the national dues to $45 per year (up from $35). We want to increase our annual scholarships to our deserving future leaders and to begin issuing Officer s Call on a quarterly hard-copy basis. There are many of the members across the nation that do not have e-mail who were not receiving the electronic issues. They were also many inactive members that were still receiving the electronic issues. We wanted to give me the incentive to reactivate their membership. The new Hawaii Sons of Confederate Veterans Camp has chartered in Honolulu and they chose Joseph Kanaka as their camp namesake. Seamen Kanaka served aboard the CSS Shenandoah. The Joseph Kanaka Camp 2288 will hold their formal charter presentation later this month and I have been The Shenandoah, July/August/September 2017, Page 4 given the honor of presenting it to them on behalf of SCV ATM Commander Johnnie Holley of Texas. The charter banquet is set for Honolulu on August 23rd. Look for photos in the next issue of The Shenandoah. Joseph Kanaka was born on the Sandwich Islands and joined the CSS Shenandoah, as Seaman, May, 1865, from the captive Abigail. At our August meeting, I would like to see our Chapter formally adopt the new SCV Camp and represent them at memorial services that we participate in. We do have an extra wreath we can use to place on their behalf. This would be a great gesture since they could not be present due to the distance. We will be having elections for 2018 at our November meeting. I am hoping some one from the Chapter will step up and take over as Commander as I have me plate full now as Adjutant and Editor. Please consider stepping up if the Chapter Nominating Committee contacts you. Looking forward to seeing all of you August 17th at Chow Pizza and Wings. Byron E. Brady Commander
