In 2003, a bomb attack near the UN office in Baghdad killed 22 humanitarian aid workers, including the UN Special Representative of the Secretary-General for Iraq, Sergio Vieira De Mello. Since that day and from 2008, to remember and respect the sacrifices and hardships endured by the humanitarians, we celebrate World Humanitarian Day. Today, there are 65.6 million refugees in the world, including those who are displaced from conflict, violence and persecution. To protect them, 10,966 UNHCR staff are at work in 130 countries, including more than 9,540 in the field.

Here is the story of refugees from South Sudan who are in an urgent need of shelter. Learn more about UNHCR s shelter campaign and the changes it has brought to the lives of refugees. AFRICA Democratic Republic of the Congo 2 Morobo 1 Opani's fleeing path 3 South Sudan Bidibidi refugee camp Uganda South Sudan Country: A new nation, declared independence from Sudan in 2011. Refugees: 2 million refugees have fled home due to civil war and violence since December 2013 Neighboring countries: One of the world s leastdeveloped countries, Uganda has accommodated 1 million South Sudanese refugees, and most of them are women and children. On the Road Again So Opani had to flee for the second time. She was already robbed of her cattle and left most of her things behind. Opani left for the Democratic Republic of Congo, carrying a small bag of clothes on her head. Opani and her daughter had to endure a long journey without water or food, and it was not easy to sleep outside. At night, they took up a spot under the tree, but could not sleep well because they were afraid of being attacked by a snake or other animals. However, despite the difficulties, Opani did not lose hope that she would soon find safety. If we could be safe, hunger was not a problem. I was tired because I had to keep walking without eating or drinking for a long time, but I did not give up on searching for safety. I could not die because of my child. The Journey Began: An Escape from Death A twenty-eight year-old Opani was a customs officer in her hometown, South Morobo. She had a simple but happy life with her young daughter, Brenda. However, one day, the conflict reached her town, and she and her daughter escaped to her grandfather s village. They move from home to home. If they find you, they will kill you. They slaughter you, it s not even killing - slaughtering. They slaughter human beings like an animal, like a cow. That s why I decide enough is enough. Otherwise I ll lose my life if I continue staying here. After arriving at the village, Opani and her daughter hid in her grandfather s house for a while. However, the area became unsafe and soon their life was in danger. It seemed impossible to flee with grandfather, and Opani had no choice but to say goodbye to him. Her grandfather comforted Opani and urged them to leave as soon as possible. I m old and not afraid of being killed. Leave with your daughter and find a way to survive. Finding Safety and Protection at the Ugandan Border Opani and her daughter walked for a week to reach the Ugandan border. When they were met by the UNHCR staff, they felt relieved. I thought we are safe now. I m proud to have survived this long journey. When I arrived at the border I got water and some biscuits. That was the first meal I had in a few days. Opani was taken to a refugee registration center where she received water, sleeping mats and blankets, and she spent the first night at a communal shelter.

With Brenda and few of her personal belongings, she made to the plot of land inside the camp that was given to her. Using the shelter kit, Opani built a temporary shelter to stay with her daughter. Even though it looks small and humble, Opani and her daughter are able to live in safety and a space of their own. *UNHCR Emergency Shelter Kit It includes a machete and a sickle to chop wood and clear land, a mosquito net, a box that contains kitchen utensils, blankets, tarpaulin, wood that can be used to build a roof and pillars, a solar lantern, jerry cans, and soap. We carry out the Shelter Campaign in three steps. Beginning with early stages of emergency relief until finding durable solutions, UNHCR provides the most ideal form of shelter solution for the environment the refugee family is living in. In the fall edition of With You, we share with you the third story in the Goodwill Ambassador series, that of Khaled Hosseini, who is a well-known author of The Kite Runner. Hosseini also lived a life of refugee Khaled Hosseini is a native of Kabul, Afghanistan, and experienced the life of a refugee. He spent his teenage years in Paris, France, following his father who was a diplomat, who fled the country after an invasion from the Soviet Union. The Hosseini family then settled in the United States to escape conflict and violence in their homeland. Khaled Hosseini has been a UNHCR Goodwill Ambassador since 2006, and visited many refugee camps including those in Afghanistan, Chad, Iraq, Jordan, Uganda. He has participated in a number of refugee protection campaigns. Meeting a South Sudanese refugee in Uganda In April, Khaled Hosseini went to a refugee camp in Uganda to help out with one of the most serious emergency relief operations for the South Sudanese. Endless conflicts, violence, and drought resulted in more than two million refugees, and the neighboring Uganda is currently providing protection to more than a million South Sudanese people. Mr. Hosseini is leading the shelter campaign so that refugees in Uganda can receive protection and continue with their lives. Sea Prayer for marine refugees In early September, to commemorate the second anniversary of the death of the Syrian refugee boy, Alan Kurdi, and to remember all the refugees who escape from conflict, violence, and persecution, Mr. Hosseini wrote Sea Prayer. This is written in the form of a monologue, delivered by a Syrian father to the son lying asleep in his lap, on the eve of their sea crossing to Europe. Sea Prayer by Khaled Hosseini My dear Marwan In the long summers of childhood, when I was a boy the age you are now, your uncles and I spread our mattress on the roof of your grandfather s farmhouse, outside of Homs. We woke in the mornings to the stirring of olive trees in the breeze, to the bleating of your grandmother s goat, the clanking of her cooking pots, the air cool and the sun a pale rim of persimmon to the east. We took you there when you were a toddler. I have a sharply etched memory of your mother from that trip, showing you a herd of cows grazing in a field blown through with wild flowers. I wish you hadn t been so young. You wouldn t have forgotten the farmhouse, the soot of its stone walls, the creek where your uncles and I built a thousand boyhood dams. I wish you remembered Homs as I do, Marwan. In its bustling Old City, a mosque for us Muslims, a church for our Christian neighbors, and a grand Souk for us all to haggle over gold pendants and fresh produce and bridal dresses. But that life, that time, seems like a sham now, even to me, like some long dissolved rumor. First came the protests. Then the siege. The skies spitting bombs. Starvation. Burials. These are the things you know. You know a bomb crater can be made into a swimming hole. You have learned dark blood is better news than bright. You have learned that mothers and sisters and classmates can be found, in little triangular patches of sunlit skin, shining in the dark, through narrow gaps in concrete and bricks and exposed beams. Your mother is here tonight, Marwan, with us, on this cold and moonlit beach, among the crying babies and the women worrying in tongues we don t speak. Afghans and Somalis and Iraqis and Eritreans and Syrians. All of us impatient for sunrise, all of us in dread of it. All of us in search of home. I have heard it said we are the uninvited. We are the unwelcome. We should take our misfortune elsewhere. But I hear your mother s voice, over the tide, and she whispers in my ear, Oh but if they saw, my darling. Even half of what you have. Our goal is to make positive change in children s lives. Carrying on the spirit of Fridtjof Nansen who made a major contribution to establishing refugee law and improving the conditions of refugees, UNHCR confer Nansen Refugee Award on an individual or a group every year. This year s Nancen Refugee Award is given to Zannah Mustapha who devoted himself for children s education in Northeastern Nigeria. Mustapha established a school in Maiduguri in 2007 that provides free education, uniforms and medical services for refugee children. Debate on Mid- and Long-term Development Direction on Refugee Law On August 24, in cooperation with the National Assembly Human Rights Forum and the Asian Human Rights Legislative Union, UNHCR cohosted the debate on mid-term and long-term development of refugee policy in the context of human rights improvement. This forum evaluated Korean refugee policy on the 4th anniversary of the enactment of the refugee law and the 23rd anniversary of the implementation of refugee status determination procedure. Also, the forum provided a venue to discuss the long-term directions of the Korean refugee law. In his welcome speech, Naveed Hussain, UNHCR Korea Representative, said Today, efforts to protect refugees are facing challenges worldwide. And Korea is the first and the only country in Asia that has comprehensive refugee law in place. I m The 10th Organized by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs For two days starting July 6, UNHCR participated in the 10th International Career Fair hosted by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, City of Seoul, and City of Busan. John Thomas, UNHCR Human Resources Officer explained various ways to work for UNHCR as staff including different recruitment pathways, resume writing, interview preparation, and more. Co-hosting World Humanitarian Day Talk Concert With the Korea NGO Council for Overseas Development Cooperation (KCOC), and 28 other organizations including the government, civil society organizations and international organizations, UNHCR co-hosted the World Humanitarian Day event. Especially this year, starting from the opening ceremony on August 6 to the talk concert on the 19th, the events were carried out in a campaign format. The opening ceremony on August 6 included VR (Virtual Reality) experience, video and photo exhibition, books and emergency relief kit exhibition that informed the meaning of humanitarianism and encouraged attendees to experience humanitarian activities. The talk concert held on the 18th featured Yiombi Thona, who is a refugee from the Democratic Republic of Congo and currently a professor at Gwangju University. The concert also featured six speakers including a photographer, a documentary filmmaker specializing in conflict, and an international humanitarian activist who shared their experiences and thoughts on humanitarianism. Additionally, through the screening of the documentary Borderline narrated by Jung Woo-sung, UNHCR Goodwill Ambassador, participants were able to get a glimpse into the life of a Syrian refugee family living in Lebanon. Small Film Festival by Korea International Cooperation Agency Korea International Cooperation Agency (KOICA) held Small Film Festival on August 16 for 100 executive and staff members and screened UNHCR s short documentary, Borderline. Small Film Festival was organized as part of the Humanitarian Day campaign, and hosted and sponsored by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and KOICA. Through UNHCR s documentary, staff were encouraged to have further interest in refugee issues and given an opportunity to experience humanitarian activities in the field. Photo provided by: KOICA UNHCR Shinsegye Simon Social Contribution Campaign Partnership On September 13, UNHCR and Shinsegye Simon signed a partnership agreement at UNHCR Korea office. Through this agreement, Shinsegye Simon demonstrated its willingness to actively support UNHCR S different activities carried out to help refugees around the world. Thanks to the positive response to the relay campaign held at all Shinsegye Premium Outlet stores (in Siheung, Paju, Yeoju, Busan), the campaign booths will be set up again at Siheung and Paju this fall. The garden at Siheung Premium Outlet also has the Wish Fountain where coins can be thrown into. All profits will be used to help and support refugees around the world. Refugee Protection Campaign with Kidzania From July 21 to August 27, Kidzania Seoul and Busan branches held a promotion campaign for children to experience refugee protection job experience. During this campaign, Seoul branch offered children an opportunity to experience building a shelter using model bricks. In Busan, children were given an opportunity to fold a shelter-shaped paper money box and many children participated. The Make a Shelter of Hope campaign activity will resume on December 22, 2017 until January 28, 2018. We look forward to seeing you there. Travel Writer Kim Nam Hee's Donation for Syrian Refugees Kim Nam Hee, a travel writer who published many books including Walking in Europe and Reading on the Road donated to UNHCR profits from People Funding on the Story Funding website (Kim Nan Hee s notes: Traveler on the Road, January 2 to June 25, 2017). In an written interview with UNHCR, Ms. Kim revealed her reason for donation, Although the amount is small, it s collected from a lot of people, and I was looking for an organization that can assist Syrian children.
