Preparation for Catholic Schools Week Rally Wednesday, February 1, 2017 Principal s Checklist 1. Reserve buses for the Rally (to go to the Bowl at Wesley Bolin Plaza immediately after Catholic Schools Week Mass at SS Simon & Jude Cathedral). Mass is at 10 a.m. and Rally starts at noon. The Bowl at Wesley Bolin Plaza is located directly east of the Capitol (the same location as last year). 2. Get students involved! Have faculty incorporate into the curriculum topics that will help them understand current issues pertinent to private/catholic education. Have faculty explain tax credits and what it means to the schools. 3. Prepare a Rally flyer and put into the school newsletter, website, and parish bulletin. 4. Send a letter to legislators in your district and ask for an appointment on the day of the Rally for a visit by a small group from your school (ensure you appointment is before or after the Rally). Make sure and include students. Legislative contact information can be found at http://www.azleg.gov/memberroster/?body=s, http://www.azleg.gov/memberroster/?body=h and a roster is also attached. IMPORTANT: It is legally important and most helpful to identify yourself as a constituent, parent, and/or supporter of your school who would like to share your experiences and good work rather than holding yourself out as a representative of the school, parish, or diocese. 5. Do some homework on your legislator(s). Have students go on-line to http://www.azleg.gov/ and search for information about their legislators. 6. Call legislator s office and confirm appointment one week before Rally. 7. Students attending the Mass and/or Rally MUST be in school uniform (and prepared for appropriate weather conditions). Please review Mass etiquette with your students and chaperones. The Rally will be the time to get excited and involved in the cheers (while always keeping in mind we are Catholic schools. Remember the purpose of the Rally is to Thank Arizona for our tuition and choice options. 8. Bring as many students, faculty, staff and chaperones as you like to the Rally to make a positive statement. Also encourage your parents to attend the Rally (we won t have enough room at the mass though). 9. Rally Information and Items to Bring: Bring Lunches (water and ice cream will be provided) Bring Trash Bags (cleanup after yourselves) Bring School Banner Bring Signs & Posters (but please do not block the view of others) Sit together as a school. Because of the location, space is limited, so please make sure and stay together (map included). Participants will be standing or sitting on cement. We ask that you do not bring or encourage others to bring chairs (there won t be enough room) except for those that have a medical need. If you have set up an appointment with your legislators, prepare a packet to take to him/her during your visit; consider including materials about your school such as a brochure or something with your school name and/or logo. Also, prepare members of the group visiting your legislator(s) to focus on positive personal experiences about Catholic school vs. trying to lobby or persuade him/her. 10. Travel directions to the Bowl at Wesley Bolin Plaza and parking information are included. 11. Appoint two students from your school to help with clean-up during and after the Rally. This is a perfect way to teach and engage our students in lifetime activism and advocacy!
Travel and Parking Information Mass & Rally SS Simon and Jude Cathedral 6351 North 27th Avenue Phoenix, AZ 85017 Parking lot is located in back of the Cathedral (enter lot on South entrance off of N. 27 th Ave.) Wesley Bolin Plaza (The Bowl) 1700 W Washington St Phoenix, AZ 85007 From the East Valley / Tucson: Travel westbound I-10 to I-17 (downtown Phoenix) exit at VanBuren St. Turn right (travel east) to 17 th Ave. turn right, travel two blocks south to Adams St. offload in front of the Capitol and cross the street (east side) or on Adams north of the capitol and student can walk across. From the West Valley: Travel eastbound on I-10 exit I-17 south. Travel ½ mile to Jefferson St. Exit at Jefferson St. Turn left travel east to 17 th Ave. Offload on Jefferson St. & 17 th Ave. or turn left on 17 th Ave. and unload at the plaza entrance (directly across from the Capitol). From the North / Ss. Simon & Jude Cathedral: Travel south on I-17 to Jefferson St. Exit. Turn left on Jefferson St. travel east to 17 th Ave. Offload on Jefferson St. & 17 th Ave. or turn left on 17 th Ave. and unload at the plaza entrance (directly across from the Capitol). From the Northeast: Travel westbound 202 to the I-10 west. Exit 19 th Ave. Travel south on 19 th Ave. 2 miles to Jefferson St. Turn left on Jefferson St. travel east to 17 th Ave. Offload on Jefferson St. & 17 th Ave. or turn left on 17 th Ave. and unload at the plaza entrance (directly across from the Capitol). Please use marked crosswalks and abide by all posted parking rules. Parking: Individual vehicle parking available in the parking lots east of the capitol lawn and are accessible from the north (Adams St.) and south (Jefferson St.) on a first come first served basis. Additional vehicle parking is available on meters and parking lots surrounding the capitol (map included). * Preferred children drop off area is on 17 th Ave. Buses: During drop off please do not block cross walks. After drop off please have prearranged pick up locations and times. Buses will not be allowed to park and wait on 17 th Ave. Off street - parking / staging is available in limited areas around the capitol mall to the south near the railroad crossings.
