Fernanda Gallo Freschi Governor 2018 2020 Governor s Newsletter No. 01 / July 2018 Dear Presidents, dear District 28 Zontians, Welcome to the 2018-2020 biennium of Zonta International Centennial! I am looking forward to working with all and each of you in this exciting biennium. As our IP Susanne von Bassewitz wrote in her first blog, Our central idea, the core of Zonta, is strong. It was innovative 100 years ago. And, today, it is as relevant and timely as before.. 2018-2020 class of Governors nickname is BridgeZ, symbolizing our commitment to lead our respective districts into the second century of service and advocacy for women: I wish all and each of us to be resourceful and generous and build bridges, honouring our past while working on our future. My first Governor s letter contains two main topics: A report on the 64th Convention, D28 2018-2020 basic information. The Governor s letter will continue to be in English, ZI international language, as in the previous biennia. I am at your disposal for questions concerning the understanding of its contents. Report on the 64th ZI Convention in Yokohama, Japan, June 29-July 3, 2018. 1. Summary Over 2,000 Zontians and a few hundreds of guests attended the Convention, that started on July 29 with the Story Festival: 31 inspiring stories of advocacy, service, fundraising and membership best practices were presented. Our district was on stage twice: Laura Santagada, A03 Director, presented the A03 service in favour of the women of Amatrice, that was also supported by our district, and I reported about the alumnae project to nurture our alumnae Great girls meet great women. On the same day, district meetings were held. At the presence of our liaisons, and with a visit by the IP Sonja Honig and the IP Elect Susanne von Bassewitz, our Governor Dietlind gave her final report on the achievements of 2016-18, and introduced the incoming board. I was pleased to thank her on behalf of D28, and present her with a gift symbolizing her leadership with a heart. At the opening ceremony, representatives of our district beared the flags of 4 of our 6 nations: Helena Buehler (Czech Republic) Ursula Kostal (Liechtenstein), Laura Santagada (Turkey), and I had the honour to bear the flag of my country. Among the keynote speakers, ZI Honorary member Helen Clark, former Prime Minister of New Zealand for 3 terms, was interviewed by PIP Val Sarah.
p. 2 of 6 During the sessions that followed, other inspiring keynote speeches were: Connecting space, people and dreams were given by Japanese astronaut Naoko Yamazaki (Amelia Earhart Fellow 1994), and co-chair of the UN Coalition of young entrepreneurs Holly Ransom (JMK awardee 2010). At the ZIF reception, our district was recognized as second best ZIF donator. Congratulations to Renate von Koeller, Beate Normann and Emanuela Tanzi, 2016-2018 Ambassadors, for this outstanding result. During the Convention, a record of $205,117 was collected at ZIF booth. The installation of the new International Officers and Governors took place during the closing ceremony. Before the gala dinner, a visit by the Empress was an honour bestowed upon ZI. Photos were not allowed: this is the official picture released, were you can spot Dietlind Stuerz on the right. The Centennial Convention will be held in Chicago on July 4-8, 2020. I strongly encourage all of you to save the date and plan attending. In the next paragraphs, you will find the main results of the voting sessions by the Convention delegates. Our district participated with 33 delegates and 16 proxies: over 80% of the clubs were represented. A heartfelt thank you to all our delegates, alternates and attendees for proactively attending the Convention, as well as to the clubs who gave proxy. 2. This will be a very busy biennium, with all the centennial celebrations: a common calendar can help everyone choose their dates without overlapping, in order to get the desired attendance. So please share your dates with our Webmaster Kathrin klaubacher@gmx.ch. Kathrin can only publish your dates if she is informed about them. 3. Website and social media Our Webmaster/PR Kathrin Laubacher and I are identifying an effective communication strategy for this biennium, that will be proposed to the District Board in September. Our website is under update, and I wish to thank particularly Lory Brunetti for staying at Kathrin s side as IT support for this task. We know that the content of some pages still needs attention: for instance, there are some difficulties in introducing the functions of new positions in the Committee pages. The webmaster will propose options for a general enhancement of the website to the district board at the DB meeting in September: until then I ask for your patience while they work on it. In the meantime, the Webmaster is also active relaunching our social media, starting from our district FB page https://www.facebook.com/pg/zontad28 as an information tool about District 28 facts and activities. You are invited to visit the page, like it, follow it and contribute by sending news about your events or interesting facts about your clubs to Kathrin klaubacher@gmx.ch. She will be happy to post what you share with her, besides ZI and District news. Kathrin is also starting to post photos on our Instagram page ZONTAD28. My heartfelt thank you to all those who started to work for our district from the very first day of this biennium (and before). To all of you, my wishes for a relaxing summer vacation, and an effective start of Zonta activities. Sincerely Fernanda Milan, July 2018
