SAVING WESTERN CIVILIZATION IN THE 20 TH CENTURY Page 4 The 20 th century was wracked by dictators and tyrants who had but one goal, the destruction of Western civilization. Strong leaders and exceptional leadership were required to defeat our enemies. Western civilization was built upon Judeo-Christian traditions, free markets, the rule of law and personal freedoms. These honored traditions have been maintained in a democratic framework requiring constant, strong leadership.western civilization leaders have been bold, courageous, unflinching and steadfast. Defeating communism s march and the Soviet Empire likewise required outstanding men and womenmaking enormous sacrifices. Defeating the Axis powers was not a foregone conclusion. The outcome of World War II always hung in the balance and Western civilization could very easily have been lost in the war. Great leaders can accomplish great deeds by making possible what seemed to be impossible and by turning hope into reality. WINSTON CHURCHILL ON 13 MAY 1940: WITHOUT VICTORY, THERE IS NO SURVIVAL Churchill exemplified the above characteristics. With the rise of Adolf Hitler and the third Reich and its determination to control the world coupled with the failure of Neville Chamberlain s peace in our time, Churchill became of the United Kingdom seven months after the UK declared war on Germany. From his underground war rooms beneath Whitehall he rallied his nation and the Allied Forces against Nazi terror, coordinating Lend-Lease for ships and armaments from America. He was joined by Franklin Roosevelt and the American war effort in December of 1941 and worked tirelessly to win the war. In his first speech to the House of Commons as on 13 May 1940, Churchill said: We have before us an ordeal of the most grievous kind. We have before us many, many long months of struggle and of suffering. You ask, what is our policy? I can say: It is to wage war, by sea, land and air, with all our might and with all the strength that God can give us; to wage war against a monstrous tyranny, never surpassed in the dark, lamentable catalogue of human crime. That is our policy. You ask, what is our aim? I can answer in one word: It is victory, victory at all costs, victory in spite of all terror, victory, however long and hard the road may be; for without victory, there is no survival. THE CURRENT PERIL OF THE SURVIVAL OF WESTERN CIVILIZATION AND OUR USA The two great threats of the 20 th century were Nazism and communism and their quest for world domination and to crush Western civilization built on Judeo-Christian tradition, the philosophy of the ancient Greeks and the law of ancient Rome. Bold, strong leaders led both fights for us. Winston Churchill, the Greatest Generation and Harry Truman presided over the victory in World War II. Truman and Dwight Eisenhower built the architecture and foundation for the battle against global communism. Ronald Reagan, Margaret Thatcher and Pope John Paul II together brought down the evil Soviet Empire.Reagan with the USA military buildup that the Soviets could not match, coupled with Thatcher s encouragement of European leaders to stand firm in the NATO Alliance against the Soviets and the moral suasion of the Pope to Be not afraid, brought an end to the scourge of Soviet communism and an end to the Cold War.

Page 5 Is it not quite astounding that a USA midwestern lifeguard Ronald Reagan, Margaret Thatcher a UK grocer s daughter and a modest Polish priest, a Pope now elevated to sainthood, changed the world? These three leaders rising by individual meritocracy unknown to one another, honed and lived their life values separately reaching a consensus of enduring values that gave Western civilization a chance for survival. Now Western civilization in the 21 st century faces another crisis, that of terrorism sponsored by radical Muslim extremists. IS IT TIME TO REASSESS OUR ALLIES AND OUR ENEMIES? We believe there is heavy historical evidence that there are times when the survival of Western civilization and USA is on the line when constructive negotiations should be held between major world leaders. Visionary thinking is needed.
