VIVA Witness and Their Liberal Connections Not all the information in this list was provided by the witnesses or their attorneys (in writing or in person) in testimony to enjoin parts of the new election reform law (HB 589 / VIVA). In some cases it took research to find all the partisan associations. For instance, in the case of Gary Bartlett, while he was introduced only as the former executive director of the State Board of Elections, there was no mention of his prior experience. Before his appointment as executive director in 1993, his work experience consisted entirely of employment as former Democratic Congressman Martin Lancaster's aide and a volunteer for former Democratic Gov. and Senate candidate Jim Hunt. Then there was George Gilbert, former Board of Elections Director in Guilford County; only after crossexamination by the defense did he admit to prior work experience working for liberal/progressive U.S. Senators, Chris Dodd (Dem-IA) and John Culver (Dem-IA). Another interesting fact is that State Senator Josh Stein's father is Adam Stein, one of the lawyers representing the plaintiffs.
